Am I the only one that has no problems with the production of, at the very least, Have A Nice Day (the song) and Last Man Standing? HAND I think especially was a perfectly judged bare bones rock song after the heavy production of the previous two albums.

I don't rate Shanks that highly, and I think there are better producer choices out there, but I do agree that Jon and Richie probably have more production influence than a lot of people give them credit for

I'm neatural on the guy aswell. Don't love him, but don't despise him either. Thinking about it, production-wise, I think HAND and Lost Highway are probably better produced that Crush and Bounce. They aren't bare-bone balls-to-walls rock albums, but they sound slightly more earthy.

Someone said earlier that Shanks fills his music with too many effects. HAND contained far less studio effects than say Bounce.

Oh by the way, Petter Collins produced These Days.

who produced on the very best BJ albums such as the early stuff KTH and NJ and also the likes of These Days? Surely these guys would be great to work with again? Or someone who produces the big Number 1 Rock/pop albums of nowadays??

Well, Bruce Fairbairn did NJ, and he's dead now, so that's very unlikely! Bob Rock produced KTF, and he's a world famous producer ... and he's also well known for helming big comeback records, so he'd probably be the obvious choice. Apparently he's notoriously difficult to work with though, so maybe the band didn't enjoy working with him? I dunno

They didn't. On one of the Crush interviews Richie commented on how Bob Rock didn't make them play like a band but made them play like 5 individuals. I don't think they'll decide to work with him again.

Rock worked as an engineer/mixer on NJ and SWW so they can't have disliked him that much personally. But as a producer it's a whole different ball game professionally from engineer/mixer

Although I like HAND/LH, I'd probably be happier if they had chosen somebody other than Shanks. The production is a bit over-glossy in parts and perhaps more suited to more pop/country artists, as opposed to a band that for the past ten years has been telling us that they're making a good-old-fashioned, big riff-laden rock record. Telling us that and then using someone like Shanks as a producer is basically just setting themselves up for disappointed fans, IMO.
