Lyrically, These Days is at a Bed of Roses level of quality. Being that we know Jon wrote BOR supposedly by himself, I always assumed Jon was primarily responsible for TD.

Richie has never blown me away with his lyrics... or at least the songs that I know he's responsible for. Some are descent, but also some are just plain bad.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that Richie has trouble writing complete sets of lyrics. On AMOTLD, there's a track co-written by Bernie Taupin. That guy writes lyrics, not music. It's just written by him and Richie. And given the recent interviews, it's not exactly slander to say that Richie's not the most articulate guy in the world.

And who said that Richie wrote the song all by himself? I always believed he played the Songs he had a Major contribution on, came up with essential ideas etc., and then crafted the song together with Jon.

But it is indeed very similar to the Overall feel of "Undiscovered Soul", the title track especially always felt like TD part 2 to me.

Really? I don't even think it's one of the 5 greatest songs on Appetite.

With Richie nowadays it mostly seems to be about trying to convince others how important he really is, which kind of highlights how insecure he actually is.

Salaam Aleikum,

LOL

The drunk part, there's no way to deny.

Well, that was my personal opinion. According to VH1 though, Sweet Child O' Mine is the 7th greatest song of the 80s.

It was a pattern he had accidentally 'discovered' and thought it sounded like circus music. So he kept on playing it and Axl over-heard it which led to one of the greatest 5 songs of the 80s.

I think a couple of Bon Jovi songs were written somewhat like that. Three in particular. Wanted Dead or Alive, I'll Be There For You and These Days. Why do I say that? It's because they are driven by a guitar pattern that, in all three cases, is very very much Sambora. And I can't possibly see Jon having come up with any of them. But, just like Sweet Child O' Mine, the key to these songs lies in these guitar patterns that I bet, Richie just had 'lying around', much like Slash and Sweet Child O' Mine. Then they sat together and built the songs brick by brick.

With These Days - the Answer has a similar structure and is similarly driven out of Sambora's little lick. Now would it be the same song without Jon? I very much doubt it. But I am sure it was born from a guitar lick spun by Richie and this is why Richie claims it. Jon, might see things very differently. He might have had the concept for the song in the first place, yet to me, it was always a Richie song, even before this whole mess that happened. These Days fits perfectly right in-between The Answer and Harlem Rain.

But, as I mentioned, it's just my theory....
I am going to say some stuff now that is baseless without the evidence. Anyway, I am sure Jon has said more than once that Lay Your Hands on Me was the only song written from a guitar riff. He 100% said that in fact, but it depends when he said it and whether These Days came after it.

I think both he and Richie have said the lyrics of Wanted came first and Richie then put the lick to it.

As for These Days, there are definately interviews from the era where Jon says he wrote the second verse. I am certain of it, but without the will to look for said interviews I cannot prove it. As a previous poster said, there is no way Jon would have accepted that song the way he did and has since if it had been largely a Richie song.

It's a great song, but every one on that album was. I'd take Jungle, Paradise City, Rocket Queen, You're Crazy, My Michelle, It's So Easy and Nighttrain over SCOM.

Desmond Child wrote everything. He told me at a Bar Mitzvah back in 2006.
