I thought "Misery Likes Company" meant something like misery is always looking for people to "torment". Something along the lines that misery by itself doesn't exist, until it finds someone. Am I making any sense?
And "play for keeps" I understood like play so that you don't forget the technique or something like that.
But then again you're a native speaker and I'm not
