Default Some lyrical questions about dry county

there is some parts in this song that i still dont understand them, they were stuck in my mind and i was listening to the song now and i thought they are really bothering me, i'll appreciate if someone can help me on them..
they are a lot, but please, i really dont get them.

To find my piece of easy street

I made my bed I'll lie in it
To die in it's the crime

You can't help but prosper (what does this mean?)
Where the streets are paved with gold (what?!?!?)

I packed up on my wife and kid

The promise has run dry

That we are God's children
And He'd be back someday (who should be back?)

And I hoped that he knew
Something as he drank his cup of wine (whom is jon talking about and what jon hoped that he knew?)

All my dreams went up in ashes

thanx so much in advance

Prosper means to be successful. The streets are paved with gold relates to the "land of opportunity" Thus, it is easy to be successful in the land of opportunity

This is religious symbolism. The 'He' referred to is Jesus, the son of God. In Christianity, Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead. in the context of the song, perhaps the protagonist is wondering how he will be judged for his actions (just my opinion).

The second part "As he drank his cup of wine" is referring to the preacher (In the blessed name of Jesus, I heard a preacher say....). Drinking wine is part of Communion, where the wine is turned in the blood of Christ.

Hope this helps!

He's ended up where he is now because of what he's done, but if you don't try to do something to correct it, it's bad. Crappy English.

Quote:
The promise has run dry
I see this as the oil wells running dry. They promised there would be oil and everyone would succeed, but the promise failed. The oil wells ran dry, didn't give any oil anymore.

Quote:
All my dreams went up in ashes
Dreams were made impossible by the fire that burned the wells, or at least something like it. "My dreams went up in ashes, and my future blew away". Ashes is the stuff left when you burn something and it rises up in the hot air from a fire and then flies away with the wind.

HTH.

While we're on the topic of Dry County, I have always thought that it reminded me of prohibition around the period of the Great Depression, or another time in some poor region. Maybe I am just a history freak and am making connections that aren't there, but that's what it has always reminded me of.

pretty much what I reckon about the lyrics but...

I've made my bed I'll lie in it means he's caused whatever situation he's in and now he has to live with it.

Like havign an affair and your wife finding out, you've made your bed and you have to lie in it.
