There's plenty of examples of both bands trying the others way, mostly in the 80s for Bon Jovi 'shows' and recently for U2 'gigs' and, for me at least it just goes to prove that.

In the 80'ies and even during the KTF tour, Bon Jovi always brought a big production that was absolutely great. U2 started doing this in the 90-ies (Zoo TV tour, Popmart and now with the Claw)
But take a look at the 2001 tour of U2 (All things you can't leave behind) : very sober but rocked amazing - proof of it in the DVD 'live from slane castle' - Go Home.
On the other hand, that tour they played arena's instead of stadiums (exept for some countries and slane castle)
What I mean is: when you want to sell out stadiums, you'll need somewhat of a production that is also visually overwhelming so that even those in the bleacher seats really can enjoy a true show.
