Yea, according to Jon's answer back when he'd answer questions on bonjovi.com it seems it's easier for him to write when he's sad:

Question:
Hey jon.i just ordered a pizza and grab pen& paper and guitar starting to write,,not much is coming to me .What keeps you writing such great tunes ?i no you got the band but man your really it,your solo stuff proved that! so my question is where do you get so many(60)ideas for new stuff,is it the killer home rec stuff, being able to experiment or just come to you guys as you go?thks JiMI

Answer:
write about your life. find something that makes you happy or sad(those are easier) say something that you wish was said to you. and imagine yourself as that character...jbj

How about Sympathy from the box set? 1992 if I recall correctly.

I'm looking to make a playlist of songs
What a cool idea!I like to make mix for my personal pleasure so I'll try and make it!
Yes,lyrically this was a wonderful moment for Jon,he's a great writer. But I wouldn't want another Grey summer for anything in the world- I don't like to think about him suffering that much.Isn't this the period when he tried to suicide?(everytime I think about it I get so sad and I want to cry,I just go crazy thinking about it,it really hurts me).
Anyway,I don't think we'll have another period like that - he's got his kids,he's dealing with fame and success,he's satisfied as an individual and as an artist,I THINK from what I can see.

I always have the most random playlist ideas, thanks. The point of this is to capture the feelings of a man who is just so jaded with his view of the music industry. I don't mean to romanticize the situation but so much beauty came out of feeling sad those few months.

I was thinking about it....
We all talk about this period, but - Jon says it was between Blaze of glory and Keep the faith, but there are 2 years between them,1990-1992;in 1990 Jon was around promoting and touring. So the quetion is:summer of '91 or summer of '92?

I'd say it's definetly more a question of '90 or '91

Definetely. Just listening to the lyrics, it's funny that these days is the sad record to most fans but these lyrics are interesting. "I've got something on my mind, I'm just a little bit depressed" for example. Great stuff.

Fields of Fire was written around that time period too.

Yeah, These Days is a pretty sad album. I remember Richie said in some interview that Jon was working through some demons at the time.
