Yes...there are plenty of "horrible" singles that are hits, as there are plenty of brilliant ones that aren't.
It's all speculation. I don't see how of us can definitively say that x song would or would not be a hit, no matter how strong your personal views on the song. I mean it's a lot easier to sit back after a song has gone to #1 in a particular market and comment on why this was so... but if you try to write another song with all the same "hit" elements, there's no guarantee the 2nd one will also be a hit. That said, I do highly doubt Unbreakable would have been a hit in Europe.  But I reckon Dirty Little Secret could have been in Aust if it had got the same airplay as HAND did at the time. Actually, Welcome to Wherever You Are even managed to chart here IIRC (albeit peaking at #40-something) even though I never once heard it on the radio. On the other hand, Who Says didn't chart at all (I didn't think it was even released here but apparently the band version was... if so I completely missed that  )
