There's hundreds of songs with the same progression, it doesn't mean it's stolen. There's thousands of songs with a I IV V chord progression, are they all ripping off Little Richard?
Same with whoever mentioned the Simple Minds song. I seriously doubt when they were banging out the kind of stuff that they were on These Days they hit a bit of writers block and "Richie went, hey man, why don't we just rip off Simple Minds..."

You are right. People went in a different direction with this post than I had intended. The simple minds song doesn't relate to STBI in any way, except the intro chords are in the same rhythm. Em, D, A, D vs. Em, C, G, D. Doesn't sound anything alike.
In songs like Joey and You had me... they stole an idea, sure, but the music and lyrics is all original, although somewhat similar to their obvious influences.
the chorus of Heaven is a place on earth is a huge rip, tho'. The chord progression, their rhythm AND the vocal melody is exactly (with very minor variations)like the chorus in Prayer.

I'm pretty sure that's a general saying. The first time my mom heard This Is Love, This Is Life she said that her dad used to say that when she was a kid.

I'm sure it is, it just struck me when I first heard TILTIL, cause it's such a long line and it's pretty much word for word. And I've never heard it in another song.

This thread comes up a few times a year hahaha and its usually the same songs.

Yea the same songs always come up in this topic, I hoped I'd found out something new (and have), since there are more influences than the ones passed around before. Since I'm not a huge fan of 60's and 70's music, there's gotta be a tonn of rip-offs from the Beatles, Rolling stones, Thin Lizzy, Petty, Dylan, Clapton and all of these guys Jon and Rich clame to be influenced by. Not to mention Southside and Bruce. Especially lyrically.
Oh well, still looking for any clues on that Neil Young song.
