The devil went down to Jersey, he was looking for a soul to steal

He was in a bind ‘cause he was way behind, so he was willing to make a deal

When he came across this young man strumming on a guitar and playing it hot

And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump and said “Boy, let me tell you what!”



I’ll bet you didn’t know it, but I Am a guitar player, too

And if you care to take a dare, I’ll make a bet with you

Blame It on the Love of Rock and Roll, boy, you gotta give the devil his due

I’ll bet this guitar o’ gold against a Little Bit of Soul, ‘cause I Believe I’m better than you



Well, the boy said my name’s Jonny, and I may seem like a gentle lamb,

But In These Arms my guitar can sing, and devil, you’ll be the one who’s Damned



Jonny, you strum your ol’ guitar, till the setting of the sun

The devil opened up his case and said I’ll start this charade

And as fire flew from his fingertips, it was 99 in the Shade

So with Blood on Blood the devil strummed, till (His) Guitar Lie Bleeding in (His) Arms

He said “This Ain’t A Love Song, Jonny! this guitar will do you harm”



Then the devil cried “I Want You, Jonny, so Lay Your Hands On Me

You should be Wild is the Wind and Living in Sin, that’s how you should Always be

These Days, Jonny, I Want to Be Loved, I’ve been so Misunderstood

So come Runaway to the Right Side of Wrong, turn away from your life of good"



“It’s My Life," Jonny said, "I’m Livin’ On a Prayer to be the best man I can be

And Everyday I say 'Hey God ! Thank You for Loving Me'

So watch me play, devil, and you will know how the end goes to the story"

And the angels joined in and jammed with Jonny, as he played in a Blaze of Glory.



So, our hero, Jonny, was the Last Man Standing, when all was said and done

“It’s the Story of My Life,” the devil cried, “This kid is just no fun!!

I feel like I’ve been Shot Through The Heart, gimme Something for the Pain”

Jonny replied “If That’s What It Takes” and tossed him some Novacaine



So the devil handed Jonny the shiny guitar made of gold

And Jonny told him "Never Come Back, you'll never get my soul!"

Then Jonny sent him back to hell, back on that Lost Highway

And as the devil headed down the road, Jonny hollered “Have a Nice Day!”
