The Evolution of Metal

Did anyone catch any part of this series on VH1 Classic? Pretty interesting, if not totally true to the facts. I watched the hour long segment on glam metal. They go over the obvious LA Sunset Strip scene and the Crue, Poison, etc. However, they do not even mention Bon Jovi. Now, on one hand, this is a compliment, but on the other, it's completely inaccurate. All the bands post 1986 they mention would have been nowhere, and were simply copying Bon Jovi's look and to some extent, sound. These weren't metal bands. To have a documentary about glam metal and not even mention Bon Jovi, in my opinion, is poor journalism. Like the band or not (which clearly the director/host of the show did not) is one thing, but to not even mention them is just an obvious hack at the band. None of the bands mentioned had half the success of Bon Jovi, and none of them remained even remotely as popular as Bon Jovi.

I bet Nikki would Kill to be 'complimented' in such a way. Even though that scene gave us some good songs, in retrospect it all turned into a big joke and I'm glad Bon Jovi are not included in it. They were way past it even by the end of the 80's (to me only about half of New Jersey can be considered to belong to that pop/glam/hair metal scene).

I don't consider any of New Jersey to be part of that scene, other than the look of some of the videos. But the music - No way.

Maybe Jon didn't give his permission for such a show. For all Hair Metal bands right now, any press is good press so they don't care.

I'd like to think Jon has a good relationship with VH1 considering they've been supporting him post 2K. Videos/Awards/Story Tellers/BHTM

Jon probably paid them off to hide the awesome glam past of Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi was more related to U2, Bryan Adams, Springsteen, etc, than the Glam bands.

No way, dude. Maybe now they are, as they seem to act like the big hair days didn't happen, but back in the day there were definitely more akin to Motley than U2 me thinks.

If this is the same special I'm thinking of, I think it's hilarious the band's logo is clearly in the intro.

Jon certainly wishes they were more closely associated with Springsteen, U2, & Bryan Adams. Surely though that isn't the case. They were definitely a hair band in the 1980's. I wish they'd just accept it already.
