Hi Huey!!!
What kind of cigarets are you smoking if you are smoking? No offence! pls, that's not a very personal thing..I smoke Camel and KentThank ya!it is importan! Cynthia~Transylvania

I stopped smoking in 1986. This last tour I smoked some. I can't be picky about the brand because I "bum" them off of people.

HI I just wanted to ask you, if you played in CRUSH why arent you in the cover or in any of the pictures? just asking because i like you alot and wanted a picture of you. bonjovi1lady
Because I'm not an official member.

Hi Hugh, After being a fan of Bon Jovi for many yrs, i was wondering why is it that your not an official member of the band. I think a lot of the fans would like to see it, as in our eyes you are already officialy part of the group. Keep rockin, Kitty
There's a height requirement and I'm too tall.

Huey, What was it like to be the final band to play at Wembley Stadium in 2000
and then play to 80,000 fans at Hyde Park on the Bounce Tour ? Cheers, Nick

Fan****intastic!

Hugh, Do you have any tattoos, and if so, what and where? DarkLady
No tattoos

Do you write your own material? / Have you ever written your own songs / co-written material? If yes, where might we find it?! Thats All & Thanks, Nola
No

Hey Huey! I have long wondered if you do not have a guitar tech such as
Lumpy do you do your own maintanence and repairs on your Bass?
Does Lumpy or Jon's guitar tech help out? LOL Jon's guitars can't keep him
THAT busy! Guitar Guy's Rock! Huey's G.G. April
Jon’s guitar tech usually works on my basses also.

Hi Hugh, Can you tell me if it bothers you that you are a full time member of Bon Jovi,
yet you are not included in interviews or Publicity Photos etc? Dianne (Liverpool, England)

With Bon Jovi, I’m like a vampire. I don’t show up in pictures and mirrors.

When was the first time you held a bass guitar in you hand and what was
the first song you learned to play on it ?
My dad bought me my first bass when I was in junior high. The first song I learned was a Beatles song, but I don't remember which one

Dear Huey!First I want to tell you that I really enjoyed the concerts I've been! It was amazing!! Two of the best nights of my life! Then, I had read a book about Bon Jovi a few weeks ago and I read that you did NOT play on every studio album. But from other fans I hear that you DO. I'm a bit confused now. What is the truth? Did you play on the albums or did Alec did? (I'm sorry if it is a bit painful to ask...? but I just have to know) Thanks and lots of love, Always, Marjolein
I didn't play at all on 7800 F

Hi Hugh!So what is your favorite BJ cd that you enjoyed making the most and why?
Also, with the 2nd anniversary coming up i'm curious, where were you on 9-11?

I liked making "Crush" because it was the first cd we recorded at Jon's studio in NJ.
I was in Connecticut on 9-11

Hey Huey,
I was wondering, how does it feel, that so many fans come running up to you all the time, askin for pictures, photos etc. ?! I always see you doing that, and you always stay so kind and calm without any stress - it's just amazing, almost a miracle!
Greetz,
Julia

I love meeting the fans.

Hi There, I'm Andy from Belgium and got a little question: Do you have any idea why your not an official Bon Jovi member? You've played in many bands, what's you favourite one?? Well Bye Hope to here an anwser soon. KEEP THE FAITH - BELGIUMBJ BON JOVI ROCKS FOREVER - Huey for member
I don’t know…one of life’s mysteries. My favorite band to play with is Bon Jovi.

Hey Hugh!! Donna from England here.
What was it like working with Alice Cooper and how did the fans differ compared to us Bon Jovi fans?

It was wonderful working with Alice. He's a great guy. I didn't really encounter his fans because I only did studio work for him.

I also see that you have worked with Southside Johnny before too. How was that?
Working with Johnny was a history lesson in Jersey music.

How old were you when you got your first car and what car was it?
It was a Triumph TR4 and I think I was about 17 years old. Obie and I blew up two engines in it.

Hello Hugh, It's been a fantastic tour this time, don't know if you remember me but I was the mad on from UK shows with the HELLO HUGH sign.! Anyway just wondered which song do you enjoy playing the most?? Andrea x x x
I love playing "Faith". Thanks for the sign

Hi, Im a huge Bon Jovi fan and I've saw them 3 times in Dublin - Hugh probably is sick of answering these type of questions - but here they are! -I was wondering about the bass that's being used on the Bounce tour? The green Fender Jazz type guitar? Obviously it's custom made but I wondering is it a Sadowsy or a Fender?
The green bass was made by "Lumpy", Richie's guitar tech. He also made the sunburst bass I used on the tour also.

In the Wembley 1995 video, what type of bass is that?
Sadowsky

And is there any particular reason why you opt for a 5 string?
Greater range.

Hi Hugh!
Since you have a history of being a studio musician, how did it feel being the permanent bass player for Bon Jovi and performing live on stage, the first times you performed live, I mean? Were you ever afraid that the Bon Jovi fans wouldn't accept you? Love, Linda, Sweden

The first few times performing with the band I was definitely nervous. Even though I'd played on all the albums I was worried the fans wouldn't be accepting. Much to my delight, the fans have been great!

Hi Hugh,
Just like to say I say you and the Bon Jovi guys in Wolverhampton this year, great show!
My question is, who would you say has been the best artist/band to work with? Who's given you the most freedom on records/live?
Thanks,Will

Thanks Will. Wolverhampton was a lot of fun. I'm glad the rain held off!To answer your question, I'd have to say that Bon Jovi has been the best band to work with. After 20 years of working together, we're family. Basically, everybody has input on what everyone else plays. I have total freedom to play what I want.

How did you get with BonJovi and does it bother you that your not an "official" member?
Also how do you find the time to answer personally to all the people that write in with questions? Thanks!

Hooking up with Bon Jovi is an old story, but to simplify it...I was hired by my old friend Lance Quinn to play on a demo of a song called "Runaway" for a struggling singer/songwriter named Jon Bon Jovi and the rest is history. Does it bother me that I'm not an official member? It is what it is. How do I find time to answer questions? I can’t answer that right now, I’m too busy.

What was your favorite show from this past tour, and why?
Giant's Stadium...because it's home.

When did you learn to play bass -- who or what inspired you?
I'm still learning...Paul McCartney and James Jamerson were inspirations.

Do you have a favorite song to play live? Are any songs harder than others to play live?
I guess my favorite song to play live is "Keep The Faith". There hasn't been one song in particular that's harder to play than others, but I'm sure one will come along!

If you could describe each of the other Bon Jovi members with just one word each, what would they be?
Jon-Driven Richie-Soulful David-Hilarious Tico-Steady

Do you have any other plans for the rest of the year, other than working on the upcoming Bon Jovi acoustic album? Any solo projects?
No plans. Waiting for whatever is around the corner.

Hi, Huey,
I remember hearing a bootleg CD of a Christmas show from a few years ago,
and you sang "walk the dog".All the other Bon Jovi members took turns in singing too.
Who decides at which shows you all get to sing ?
And is this something we might get to hear again sometime ?
Thanks, Scott.

The Christmas shows were a lot of fun. Everyone had a chance to sing. I picked "Walking the Dog" I don't know of any Christmas shows planned in the future.

Hey Huey! I hope this isn't too "political" of a question to answer, but I have been wondering this since 1995. What was it like for you as a *vocalist* to replace Alec John Such? He was obviously the Soprano of the group, and recorded a fairly powerful voice on the albums. Did you put pressure on yourself to become that type of singer in order to preserve the harmonization-heavy choruses of the older material such as You Give Love a Bad Name? THANK YOU! Sam Mikelic, San Diego, CA
I have no problem with the harmonies.

Hmmm....what aftershave DO you use, Hugh? Jan PS thanks for the UK shows, I was over your side at Wolverhampton and loved every second
Versace L'Homme

Hi! I'm a huge fan btw! Loved you guys for 8 years hehe Anyway, I was just wondering, what’s it like being on stage with the greatest rock band on the planet and how do you feel when you see a fan holding a sign that says "I Love Huey" or something on it? Jenn
How does it feel to play with the greatest rock band on the planet? It doesn't suck! I'm honored.

hi U, Y0U, hughes big mac donalds huey,duey...and "loui, loui, loui...loui !"ok i wonder how it feels to be the first BJ, who adopts a website?!? do you save money like this?
yours sincerly rock n rolly, Robert Meyer-Acs

How does it feel to be the first BJ? I don't know about you, but I loved my first BJ!

Being a "G.G." ( Guitar Girl ) I have often wondered if you collect Bass Guitars like Richie collects guitars? How many do you own and how many go on tour with you? Lotsa Love, Huey's G.G. P.S. The neighborhood football games are the roughest! LOL As the only girl in our neighborhood the guys allowed to play, I remember all too vividly the murder and mayhem even all these years later!
I have 10 basses right now. They're all great instruments, but my favorite one is a Hofner Club Bass. You're right about the neighborhood football games!

Hi Huey!
I often wonder, why you don't party on stage. As far as I know, you're just standing at your place on the right side andyou just don't seem to move 2 steps away *LOL* Greets from a big BON JOVI fan,
Bastian

I'm having a party in my pants every night on stage.

The "old" Bio:

Hugh McDonald was born December 28, 1950 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He picked up the bass as a teenager, playing along with records. His inspiration? Paul McCartney. At his parents’ advice, he started taking lessons.

The first album he played on was “Deirdre Wilson Tabac” in 1970. In 1973 Huey was introduced to Steve Goodman by drummer Steve Mosley and Guitarist Steve Burgh. Huey played on several of Goodman’s albums and continued to work with him until Goodman’s death in 1984.
Another artist Huey was introduced to by Mosley and Burgh was Philadelphia-born guitarist David Bromberg. Huey joined the David Bromberg Band and started touring.

In 1980 Huey moved from Cambridge, where he had been living for 6 years, to New York. He started working at Power Station, a studio owned by Tony Bongiovi, Jon Bon Jovi’s cousin.

There he was asked to play the bass on one of Jon’s demos: “She don’t know me”.
Shortly after that he recorded “Runaway”, as part of the All Star Review studio band. The link with Bon Jovi was made...

Huey was hired to play the bass on the album “Slippery When Wet”, and played on every Bon Jovi album after that, though he never got credit for his work. He continued working with other artists as well, such as Michael Bolton, Cher, Alice Cooper, Mary McCaslin,...
His relationship with Bon Jovi changed when “official” bassist Alec John Such was fired in 1994. Huey was asked to join the band for a Christmas benefit and TV performances. After that, he joined the band on their world tour. However, Jon did not want to replace Alec John Such as a band member, so Huey’s role in the band became somewhat confusing...

He finally got full credit for his work on the album “These Days” (and every album after that) and he got to play his bass lines live on tour. But officially Bon Jovi became a band of four, leaving Huey out of the photo shoots, interviews, cd covers,... although every now and then he does appear in a picture or an interview... and to make the confusion complete he is left out of some video clips (like “Thank you for loving me”) , but appears in others...

In 1997 Huey played on Jon Bon Jovi's solo album 'Destination anywhere' and went on tour. JBJ's band was called 'The Big Dogs' and also included Bobby Bandiera on guitar, Jerry Cohen on keyboards, Everett Bradley on percussion and Shawn Pelton on drums.

By the end of 1998 Huey joined Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, replacing David Hayes. After a year of concerts, he left again in the fall of 1999 to re-join Bon Jovi.

Today his status with Bon Jovi is still one of “unofficial” member, although the fans worldwide consider him a part of the band. And despite his busy schedule with Bon Jovi, he still finds time to work with other artists like Jaci Velasquez and Ricky Martin

Bass Ball
Hugh McDonald goes deep for Bon Jovi and he loves it.

"I worked with Jon Bon Jovi before there actually was a band called Bon Jovi," laughs bassist Hugh McDonald, who has been playing fulltime with the New Jersey rockers since 1995, when he replaced Alec John Such. "I knew Jon and Richie before they knew each other."

McDonald's first encounter with Jon Bon Jovi was a case of being in the right place at the right time. In 1983 there was no "Bon Jovi"; the singer, then a rock star only in his dreams, was still known by his given name: Jon Bongiovi. "He was working as a janitor at the Power Station recording studio, and a friend of mine, [producer] Lance Quinn, was helping him record his demos there that night. They would use whatever musicians happened to be in the studio. I was primarily a session bassist, and Lance called me to play on a demo of the song 'Runaway'. Guitarist Tim Pierce, drummer Frankie La Rocka and [E Street Band] keyboardist Roy Bittan, all of whom were then recording with the singer John Waite, were also on it. That recording got Jon his record deal."

When Bongiovi, now calling himself Jon Bon Jovi, put a band togheter soon after, the bass spot went to Alec John Such, a friend of the frontman's choice for drums, Tico Torres. But McDonald's playing evidently impessed Jon, with the result that, in 1985, he began working with the band in the studio.

A year later, Slippery When Wet, the band's third album, transformed Bon Jovi into superstars and MTV favorites, thanks in part to the memorable McDonald bass hook that opens the smash hit "Livin' on a Prayer". "That bass line went through a lot of changes," recalls McDonald. "Originally, it sounded like the intro to the Four Tops' 'I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)'. Bruce Fairbairn, who produced the album, noticed the similarity, and so did everyone else. So Richie, Jon and I worked until we came up with the line you hear on the record.

"
Even as Bon Jovi flourished in the late Eighties, McDonald continued his session work, recording with artists as diverse as Cher and Alice Cooper. That diversity had always marked his playing. He began his carreer in the early Seventies as a sideman with the earthy, accoustic-based artists Steve Goodman and David Bromberg. McDonald is particulary grateful to Bromberg, who gave the young bassist a baptism by fire.

"When I auditioned, I wasn't very familiar with his style - he played everything from country blues to bluegrass to straight rock. We jammed a little bit and then he told me, 'OK, our first gig is next week - here's the song list.' I racked my brains and learned as much as I could. When I got to the show, I gave him a list of tunes I'd learned. He looked at it, ripped it up and played whatever he felt like playing!

"
When Alec John Such quit Bon Jovi in 1995 - he said he'd grown tired of life on the road - McDonald was called upon to replace him. Since then, he has toured with the band and appeared on the albums These Days, Crush, the live recording One wild Night and now Bounce.

Bon Jovi's sound is often determined by the interplay between McDonald's bass and Richie Sambora's guitar. A classic example of this can be heard on the new single, "Everyday", where the descending bass outlines the chord progression underneath Sambora's guitar riff.
McDonald says that back in 1983, during the "Runaway" session, he sensed something special about the very young Jon Bongiovi, although he hardly imagined the impact of the ambitious singer would have on his own career. "For me it was just another session," he admits. "But even then," he adds, "I had a feeling that he might become a big star. He worked very hard in those early years to build a following, and it's paid off for everyone. I can't think of anyone more dedicated to his work than Jon, and that's one reason I love playing with him."

Idear huey, hi!how're you? by the way,one thing to help please?
you know about the wembley 1995 set, because i think i've got
the totally different setlist from my ebay seller and the internet.
did jon sing 'these days' in that concert?and also 'rocking in the
free world'?after you guys did 'hey god'?did you guys do 'some
thing for the pain' in that concert or not?because when i looked
the setlist on the internet 'something for the pain' is not included.
so is it the correct setlist; 1.livin' on a prayer, 2.you give love a bad
name, 3.keep the faith, 4.wild in the streets, 5. always, 6.i'd die for
you, 7.blaze of glory, 8.runaway, 9.dry county, 10.lay your hands on
me, 11.i'll sleep when i'm dead/papa was a rolling stone, 12.bad
medicine/shout, 13.bed of roses, 14.hey god, 15.something for the
pain, 16.i don't like mondays(with bob geldof), 17.wanted dead
or alive, 18.stranger in this town, 19.someday i'll be saturday night,
20.this ain't a love song am i correct with this setlist?anyway,i'm
just wandering why jon always sing 'shout' after 'bad medicine'?
just wandering. regrads, john(badmedicine1986)
I have no idea

The list of "other bands Huey worked with" on this
homepage contains the link to Billy Joel's official
homepage, but there is no further infomation on a
Huey/Billy collaboration on this site as well as on
any other. Did you really ever play with my other big
hero Billy Joel? I thought I would know everything
about him and his musicians... Which tour/concert or
which album/single of Billy Joel did you play on? Or
when did you play with him? How is it playing with
such a "legend"? Would you enjoy covering a Billy Joel
song with Bon Jovi? Do you have a favorite Billy Joel
song or album? Yours, Martin Koch from Kiel/Germany
I've never played with Billy Joel. I've played with his drummer.

Hello Hugh McDonald. I'm a 18 years old fan of Bon Jovi
from "The Little Denmark". I have some question, that I
hope you will answer. What danish bands do you know?
Is there a danish band you like? Do you know, if Bon Jovi
will come to Denmark in his next tourné? Many thanks for
a lot of good music, and good luck in the future. Daniel.
I'm not familiar with any Danish bands.
I don't know if we'll be there.

dear huey, hi!i think there's a question for me to ask you
about the setlist of that bon jovi concert of 20th september,
2000 in china club, just wandering have you guys played '
keep the faith' in that concert?i think the recording has
appeared on the 'bon jovi 1985-2001'that one wild night
recording, but just couldn't find this set on the internet.just
get into a bit confuse.thanks! regrads, jimmy
Are you kidding me? I don't remember last week!

Hi,
I am one of the many other Hugh McDonalds on planet
earth. I am 50, a professional musician and producer
working in Melbourne, Australia.
I was with a successful Aussie band called Redgum who
had a few hits here in the 80's.It has crossed my mind
to
say hello a couple of times and now finding this on
your website has made it easy.
I think I may have been introduced to you about 20
years ago in Cairns , Nth Queensland, Australia at a
nightclub music venue but I'm not sure if it was
possibly a different member of Bon Jovi.
I play, folk, jazz, rock , guitar, fiddle, mandolin
and some bass as I produce cd's for local
singer/songwriters.
Nothing particularly successful but we all earn a
living from music and enjoy a good lifestyle with
families etc.
If you get to Australia please look me up.I am coming
to the us in September to play and sing at a wedding
in Nantucket.
I'd ask you to play bass but I couldn't afford you!
All the best with music and life, you have a great
name!
Regards,
Hugh McDonald
Good to hear from you! I know of you! As a
matter of fact, some of the things on my disco-
graphy are actually you...I think

Hugh, One question I really need to know the
answer to; Does Propecia really work? My
friend Dino asked me to ask you this.....
Here is his photo.... Merry Christmas!
xoxoxo Billy
Propecia works as well for me as the Viagra works for Dino.

Oh yip question? Turkey or chicken? Love ya loads!

Hi Hugh! Do Jon and the rest of the boys know about this homepage and about its contents? Do they know about the "Huey for member" campaign of the fans? (Just signed it...) What do they say about it? I mean, how can they ignore it? How is your relationchip to Alec? Does he know your homepage? Yours, Martin from Kiel/Germany
Don't know. Great. Don't know.

Hi Huey I have 2 questions 1 is how is it working with Jon,
Richie,Tico, and David? My Second Question is do you
rememember the Febuary 18th, 2003 Concert in Alburn
Hills Michigan if you do. Do you remember me I was the
little 9 year old girl on the side of the stage with a wrist -
band on my hand screaming. Could you say hi to David,
Tico, Richie, And Jon For me Thanks see ya on the next tour.

Hi Huey, for Obie O'Brien, the new album would have
the potential of "Slippery When Wet", with 5 hits rock !!!
You are OK with him ??? Thank you for the answer,
bye Huey !!! Damien.France.
I agree with Obie. It's going to be a great album.

Hello Huey, I would like to know who is picking the bands to open BonJovi-shows and if BonJovi already got bands for thenext tour. If not, it would be great if you could recommend the Swedish band "EUROPE" to the person in charge. You might remember them from the eighties - or their song "The final countdown". The got a new album out called "Start from the dark", which is really good, and they have just done a couple of great shows in Germany. John Levén (bass) was speaking to a fan (from America) after the Munich-concert, and told him that there are plans do some more shows next year (in germany) and that they would appreciate to play in America, if they would get the opportunity to do it. I am convinced, that they would be the ideal band to open BonJovi-shows, because most people I talked to during the"EUROPE"-concerts in Stuttgart and Munich are also BonJovi-fans, like me. For informations/contact please go to www.europetheband.com Manuela, 36 from Munich
Unfortunately....it's out of my hands.

Hello there, I just bought the "new" album of Bruce Foster and Richie Sambora Shark Frenzy Volume 2 and recognize that you are mentioned in the credits. Have you worked with this band earlier, so are you playing on the recordings? yours, Chris
I'm good friends with Bruce.

Bon Jovi fan here, just wondering where the hell is your
pics on all the albums your part of and why did you not
receive an award at the AMA's? You are as much a part
of this band as Jon is, just wondering...you need the respect
man...rock and roll friend...
Thank you. I received an AMA award.

where do i get a pair of sunglasses like you wear on
stage and what make are they
Which ones and what's it worth to 'ya?

Hi Huey! This is Andrea from Germany. I've met you a few times and you've probably seen me in front row 5 times last year in Europe. Maybe you remember me when I tell you that I was one of the 3 crazy girls who had that "little" banner that said "SamboraRocks".
I got a question to you that - up to now - nobody could answer me. Last year in Erfurt (the first BJ-show in Germany) there were a lot of names displayed on the large screens during the song Undivided. I guess that these names were names of the victims of 9/11. I've seen
so many BJ-show which have all been great. But the fact is that I never had to cry during a concert because of a ballad or something else. BUT listening live to Undivided (one of the greatest BJ-songs) and then reading all these names on the screens was so touching
that I started crying. This was a very very moving moment to me. I still get goose-pimples all over my body when I think of it. During the 4 other concerts I've been to after Erfurt these names haven't been displayed on the large screens anymore. And it seems to me
that the have never been shown at any other concert since Erfurt. Do you know the reason for that??? Andrea PS: At the end of November I'm going to visit New York City for
3 days. Because I've never been there before would you mind being my travel guide? ;o)

*The names were 9/11 victims. I don't know why they weren't displayed again. I'm a terrible guide...we'd be lost.

Hi Hugh! My name's Xavi and I'm from Spain so sorry for
my english. I wonder what kind of process do the band
follows to write a song? do you get a tape with a song
and you have to find the chords by ear and write the
bass line? Or how do you do? Your bass is unbeliavable
but you gotta be in the credits of the songs as a songwriter!!!
Thank you for your music. Greetings from Barcelona.
We usually hear the song and then come up with our own parts.

Where can the DVD of your technique be purchased? KB
Check your local XXX DVD emporium...wink, wink, nod, nod

Hi hugh! the cover of the box set is awful, why the guys do that! you'rent on it! Please tell me it's a joke! all the fan find this one awfull!
It's not a joke. I couldn't be on it because my ass looks better in silver.

Hi Huey!! I've noticed you're more "laid back" and "mellow" than the rest of the members of Bon Jovi. What's really going on behind those glasses? You're the best and can't wait for another tour--waiting patiently in Ohio!! Val
You 'gotta watch the quiet ones!

Hello, i just wanted to ask, if you like any music, or
some style(rock, etc)?
My favorite is older R & B.

Are you as excited about the Box Set as the fans are?
We over at bonjovi.com are going nuts about it!
Looking forward to seeing you on tour! Lori
I'm more excited about the box set because there's stuff on it that I don't even remember playing!

Hello Huey! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to ask questions.
Here ar e mine: At the end of show, which drink do you have a
craving for, a tall glass of cold beer, wine, or something else? Last
weekend I met up with nine Bon Jovi fans in Toronto. We are
wondering where you would prefer living, in Kansas or Australia?
And finally: has Kelly accepted your proposal yet? Do you need
flower girls for your wedding? Wishin you all the best and sending
a hug,Alice (Vienna)
Vodka, cranberry and lime...AUSTRALIA...She said "yes" and we need bartenders, not flower girls.

Hi again, ive left you alone for a bit now , but am still
going to bug you, has she answered you yet (now be
positive) Love Kes
yes, positively...and I'm very happy.

hi hugh! thanx a lot for take the time to do this, I`ve got a few questions for you
1) How is your new home?
2) How Jon can reach the notes of a song in a record ( These days to Bounce, because of his age) and he can``t reach these live?? The voice of the record is helped by machines??? 3) Can you tell us a little bit of the new record?? Thanx again! Argentina miss you

1) Love it!
2) Jon reaches the notes...no problem
3) Love it!

One last question from me. A couple of weeks ago steve forbert did a show here, and I was looking forward to meeting him, even though he was by himself. However I didn't get to meet him due to some other circumstances. Back to my question...I was wondering if you ever tour with him? Allen
I've toured with him before, but it's been years.

Hi Hugh! I'm secound time here, but first time asking you.
My name is Chris and I'm from Hungary. First thank you
for taking time and answering all our questions, you're
great. My first question. As i said I'm from Hungary, I'm
just curious is there any chance, that you'll come to my
country with the next tour? You were here twice, first
1993, then 1996. I would very happy if you'll come to
Hungary. Let me thank you for the 2 great concert
which I passed through last year in Vienna and Münich.
In Vienna we had with my friends a very big transparent
which said: Thx for 20 years. We were very happy when
we saw your reaction. My second concert in Müncih last
year was the best of my life. Was this show for you
something special, too? Anyway which show of Bounce
tour was the highligh of the tour for you? Sorry for my
english it's not good... I can't wait the box set, the new
studio album and the new tour! I wish you all the best
from Hungary! x x x Chris
I'm hungry for Hungary! How can
you be Hungary if you're anywhere
near Turkey?
The highlight of the tour was
Hyde Park in London.

Hi Hugh! I'm 24, from Ontario Canada and play a Matt Pulcinella bass. I was just informed by Matt yesterday that it was made for you!! Assuming that's correct, I couldn't be happier, as I've been a huge Bon Jovi/ Hugh McDonald fan for years. Just wondering, how do you find Sadowsky compares to MPG? Keep on groovin', Marty
I think Matt's a great guy and a great bass builder! It's a tough call, but I prefer Sadowsky.

Hey Hugh, It seems that you have a sense of humor much
like the other members of the band. Now I know you did
studio work with them for quite a while before actually
joining them. My question is, was the transition into the
band as easy as I would imagine it? Cheers to you and
the band for "rockin us" till the end of eternity! Maria
A little lubrication and I slid right in!

Huey - I use a 4 string Fender P Bass and and play in a Jovi Tribute band. Never played a 5 string but on the look out fo a new bass. Would I benefit from the extra string? and what songs would it be important on? PS my influence was always John Deacon (up untilrecently) but your bass lines are a real pleasure to play, thanks
The 5th string adds a lot for me, but it's not necessary if you're comfortable with 4

Hi Hugh!!! Well,it's not a question,I only want to say....I love BJ and love you too!LOL Can't wait for the Box Set,the new album and the new tour!!!! Do you have a intuition if BJ comes to Madrid next time??See you! Patri
I love BJ's too

Hugh, Love your Q & A. I think it really cool the way you
interact with the fans. The email updates always make
me want to drop such a nice guy a note! Bass players are
the sexiest. I married one myself My husband is a born
musician, went to MIT in Hollywood, played locally years
ago and though I dont know much about the bass myself,
I have always been told what a great bass player he is.
He doesnt play now as he is in Insurance. He always said
what a big machine the music industry was and he wanted
a safer bet for money. LOL My question: I am curious as to
the "decor" or"style" of your new home. Have you "two"
had time to decorate your home or hire a designer? I am
opening an Interior Design business. No, Im not soliciting
for a job-lol. Just interested in what others are doing. I
cannot wait to hear the new album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please play Vegas so this Housewife Mom can get out
and have another great night. Tiger Jam was SO MUCH
FUN! Kellee B.
Our designer is named Dino Bochichiapolis...he's
indispensible. He works for Vodka and pastries.
We keep him chained to the dehumidifier in the
basement. He's got a dry sense of humor!

Hi Huey, what is your favorite venue now??? The Wembley Stadium doesn't exist anymore. What was your favorite venue in Germany? Thanks, hope to see you on the road in 2005 Timm from Kassel, Germany
Olympic Stadium in Munich

Hi Huey! it's my first time that I've written to you, well I just wanna tell u that I love the way you play de bass, your style, well, in fact Imbassist of a band called Ozono from Mexico. As I was tellin' you... I know u use many kind of basses and I wanna ask u what sadowsky bass do u prefer?, coz u know, I'm thinkin bout buying a sadowsky bass, but know I'm there in mexico and I have no time to go there where roger sadowsky sells those wonderfull basses, so I wonder if you could answer me what sadowsky bass do you suggest me (5 strings) what pick-ups, wood etc... Well u know, as I remember, I have seen u with a sadowsky bass that a fell in love with it, it's sunburst, you use it in the video of say it isn't so. I'd be very very glad if you could suggest me what sadowsky bass of 5 string to buy it. thank you, this is Moe.
A 5 string PJ, rosewood fingerboard, alder body. Check out his website.

Hi Huey! We read from a JBJ interview that the upcoming
boxset will include one unrealised new song. Did you already
work on it? Or it is too early for the recording operations?
Big kisses and hugz, Erica
The box set is done. It will be out in November.
I'm listening to it as we speak.
Lots of unreleased material

Having been a fan of Bon Jovi for a considerable amount of
years, i was quite surprised to hear that (bar one album) you
played all the studio bass work for the band.My question is
did you ever see Bon Jovi play with Alex and what did you
think of his enterpretations of your work? Thanks, Matt
Yes, I have watched him play. I enjoyed it.

Hey Hugh, I was wondering if you played on Jon's Destination Anywhere album. I just love the bass part on the demo song "Drive".Thanks. Sandy, Colorado Soul Sister
Yes I did. Thank you.

Hi Huey, my name is Thomas. I play some Bon Jovi Songs in a Coverband and here is my Question to you. Between how many Sounds to you switch when you play Live with Bon Jovi and in what Position are your Bass, Mid, Treble Knobs? Do you use a Compressor? Thanks You, Thomas (I live near the Pyramid Headquarter in Bubenreuth and our Band use only these Strings - Max make us very good Prices )
I use the same bass, I run everything flat and I don't use a compressor. And I love Pyramind Strings and I love Max! Say "hi" for me!

Hey Huey! I've got 2 questions, hopefully you will be so kind to answer them. The first question is about Richie. I noticed on a video that he changed his guitar in the middle or end of a song. Why does he do that? Maybe because he broke a string or... ? When you played the One Last Wild Night show in Jersey (man, that show rocked) I noticed he changed guitar in the last few chords of "Shout" (the very last song of that show). And later I saw it on another video as well (that time on Keep the faith). Why? The last question: which brand of bass do you prefer? (Fender or....) Thank you for the answers!!! and keep rocking! Greetings from Wesley, Holland
I think he changed his guitar at the end of "Shout" to get ready for the next song. I love Sadowsky's

hello!! so... how long has been since you smoke your last joint??? Did you get to do that in "the early days" with any of the band??? any funny memories???Just curious...esteban... thanxx
I've never really been a pot smoker...ever

Hi, is a great sensation write you, I feel you like part of my life. Well, I`d thank you if you can tell about all your participations for another musicians, you know, Ricky Martin, Bon Jovi, etc. I got a mailing list in Argentina and I need this information for my members. Thanks and take care. Argentina is waiting for you. Marie LadySambo
All that info can be found on my website...thanks to Liz!

Hi Hugh, I know you played bass for Cher during the 80's, and
having just seen her in concert in the UK on her Farewell Tour,
I wondered whether you'd had a chance to see her Living Proof/
Farewell Tour in the US. It was an awesome show, and the bass
player (Bill Sharpe I think his name is) was very funny doing funky
dance moves and playing to the audience. It was a great show, but
Bon Jovi are still best! (Maybe Jon should try descending onto the stage
on a giant chandelier dressed in a sequinned cloak and fur hat one
time - that would be worth seeing! LOL) Keep rocking, Hugh, look
forward to seeing you next time on the road. Love, Jan (Lazy)
Yes, that would be worth seeing

Hi Huey! I wonder if you guys need to rehearse before a show. I'm pretty sure that you won't work on any dance moves ;o) But sometimes what you do and play seems to be so spontaneous and special for that exact moment that I can't imagine this could have been practiced before. Thx for answering! Petra, Germany
We practice as little as necessary, but I work on my dance moves everyday!

hello!! Do you know why the David's albums "On a full moon"
and "Lunar Eclipse" had almost the same songs??? and what is
his problem with the moon anyway??? Thanks for take the
time to do this..
He loves to bark at the moon.

Can I ask what Kelli does for a living or is that too
personal? Has any one ever mentioned she looks like
Claudia Schiffer the model? Your a beautiful couple!
~Love G.G.
Kelli works with horses. She's my Claudia Schiffer.

Hey Hugh! The first information concerning you I've taken
from the interview in the German musician's magazine
"Fachblatt" back in 1995 - do you remember that funny
one with Dieter Heinsohn during your first tour with Bon
Jovi? Has it really been your first official interview? I taught
myself to play the bass guitar with the help of the "These
Days" record! Why don't you play Hartke amps anymore?
And last question: Why don't you play in my band, man,
I assure you to let you be an official band member if you
want to - how about that? Yours, Martin from Kiel/Germany
Yes, I remember the interview. It was a lot of fun. I'm not using Hartke amps because I wanted to try EBS and I'm very happy with them. Make me an offer.

Did you play in the same band with Donna Grasso back in the 80's?
I used to see them all the time and they frequently played at Chaplin's
in Yonkers where I was bartending. Were you there? Thanks, Mary
I did play with Donna Grasso. I don't remember if I was at Chaplin's.

Hi Hugh, My name is Seán and I am the bass player withthe Irish Bon Jovi Tribute Band "Keep the Faith" As you can imagine, I am a big fan and I'm delighted to be able to play Bon Jovi music and your bass lines. My question is about singing, When John is singing melody, Richie seems to be singing a harmony to the melody and I am just wondering what you and David sing? Do you sing along with John's melody or as a band, do you sing 3 or 4 part harmonies ? Thanks for taking time out to answer these questions and I look forward to seeing you in Dublin real soon. Keep the Faith -Seán
3 or 4 part harmonies
