If I wanted to convey the essence on Bon Jovi to a Jovi novice? That's an easy choice, I'd pick the TLFR version of Keep The Faith. Just kidding...that version of the song is an abomination!

Seriously, I think it comes down to Blood on Blood or Just Older, and it depends on who I'm playing it for.

If they're a little older and I think they might appreciate the 80's or ealry 90's sound, I'd play Blood On Blood which really is the ultimate Bon Jovi song.

If they're a little younger, I'd go with Just Older (ironically) because it doesn't have any of the "cheesy" 80's stuff (keyboards, production, etc).

I considered Someday I'll Be Saturday which is perhaps my favorite song, but I think it wouldn't resonate as well with a new listener. Any Other Day is also nice but it's too recent to be sure.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE is by far the best song they have written and in my opinion the best song which has ever been written by any band. i used to think it defines bon jovi but by now i think that's wrong. there's no other song that defines ROCK music better than Wanted.

I think that despite the penchant for big ballads and anthems, Bon Jovi has a fair bit of variety. Because all of my friends have heard the big singles I would play something like 'Diamond Ring' to show someone new to the band that they can look beyond the hits and singles and find a group of musicians who are capable of something else, too.

In terms of a defining song, it's got to be Wanted or Prayer

The song I'd play someone to try to promote the band to them ... would depend on their music taste really. A metal fan might appreciate a song like Hey God, a fan of more modern rock might like some of their post 2000 stuff ... etc.
