I listened to a interview Bobby did in June and he said that it took a year or two before Jon convinced the other guys for him to hire another guitar player (Bobby). He goes onto say that 'it was a rough road because Richie and Jon weren't seeing eye to eye. Richie wanted to see things his way and Jon wanted to see things his way.' He references this as his history of being with the band, not as a recent development that led to Richie leaving. He did say that Richie isn't in the band anymore and wasn't coming back.
For those interested, it is a 90-minute interview of Bobby's musical journey of playing the guitar from age 12 or so. He talks a lot about Bruce and Southside, not too much about Bob Jovi and he doesn't address him not playing with the band anymore.
