Default These Days (Richie's version)

I've got a feeling that most people here didn't like Richie's version of These Days (played on the LH tour). I agree that he sounded bad on the Tokyo show, but I do think this is brilliant (except for the violin solo):

I tried to find a thread about this but couldn't, so I would like to know why you guys hated it so much: was it his voice, was it the violin ...

Cheers

Eduardo

No, I actually loved Richie's version. There were a few real disasters in there performance-wise but a lot of fantastic renditions as well. Just gutted I never got to see him sing it last tour... although we were spoiled with 'Wild Is The Wind', 'Something To Believe In' and 'These Days' with Jon on lead vox so I have no real complaints actually.

I loved him doing "These Days". The first time I saw a video if it was from Tokyo and it blew me away. I was speechless. There was so much soul in his voice. Too bad he went back to IBTFY most of the time, I would've loved to witness this.

I would prefer hearing Richie sing one of his solo songs as oppose to any BJ song. I was unfortunate enough to get I'll Be There For You at the back to back shows I went to on the Lost Highway tour... so I haven't seen him do These Days. I think his best performance would be a lesser known Bon Jovi song. Or at least a song Bon Jovi doesn't play often live. I didn't enjoy IBTFY or LYHOM but I loved Homebound Train.

I really like his version. I was bummed that I didn't get a chance to hear it live. Although, as pointed out before, that violin solo was not needed.

I didn't hate Richie's version, and was lucky enough to get it live on the LH Tour. That said, it's my least favorite of the band songs he's done. That said, I also think TD is the band's masterpiece in it's original version, so I have a bias.

I think both version has their own charm. As TD is my favourite song of all time I don't think I can dislike it. Richie made it more of his own story with his passionate vocals, very much soul! Jon makes it more of a story of a whole, and another kind of passion. And it's really nice that he has dropped the guitar for the song during The Circle Tour. It turns out to be a really good live song with Jon moving around, especially the 2nd verse! And of course Richie back vocals is very missed in his own version!

One thing I miss in Jons version nowdays is the fact that he don't goes for the high note before the 2nd chorus any more, "I guess I rather dies then fade away".

Richie did it in all shows!
- 4.04

Jon did it back in the days, Helsinki 1996 here. (one of the best TD peformances ever)
- 4.50

He "kinda" tried to do the same thing in 2000 to like in Gothenburg!

In 2001 it was gone, he didn't even tried to go for it. Sad, cause I think that was one fo the highlights of the peformance!

Me too. I didn't like his Lay Your Hands On Me that much. HT was better. But I think that he should sing a song of his solo records or something rare from the band.
The These Days version he did on the LH Tour was good, I liked it because Jon's version of the song played during the last tours (Bounce Tour, HAND Tour, LH Tour) weren't that good! But the performances Jon did during The Circle Tour were better, so I think that now, after the 2010/2011 tour I prefer Jon's versions. For example, Buenos Aires, Udine, London, Lisboa concerts. The song shined a lot during this last tour, especially with the final "oohh ohhh"!

I liked it, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original version. I personally hated the violin solo. It was a good solo, but Richie's solo in These Days is one of my favorite solos of all time, so to hear it excluded wasn't my favorite moment ever.

Homebound Train was great for him, as was Lay Your Hands with that added jam at the end. Hopefully he'll sing some of his new songs on the next Bon Jovi tour.
