These Days didn't "bomb" but it, so far, is the most unsuccessful album in the US. From what I understand, it has sold about 9 million worldwide, but in the US, only 700,000. Unless Bounce picks up, it won't break 1 million here either (it has sold 300,000, more than half being the first week, and the rate now is around 10,000 a week. I am hoping it will pick up with the new single tour), but These Days, in my opinion, is the best. Yeah, they are pessimistic, but that is okay, they are GREAT lyrics. "Saw a vagabond king where a syrofoam crown, wondered if I might end up the same" is just an example. Hey God is not poor, I know it is blaming God for problems, but what is wrong with honesty? A lot of people take that approach, and I remember during an interview with Metal Edge at the time, Jon said he was questioning God and organized religion, the album was full of honesty. You can't say songs are not good because you don't agree with the position taken, or what it is about. The bottom line is, if the lyrics make people think, or if they have a strong attitude either siding with the band or not, the lyrics have served their purpose. With this album, Bon Jovi people THINK instead of making them wanna be happy and party...it is just different. I think it is better than KTF, Jersey and SWW, I know everyone doesn't agree, but that is okay, that is what makes Bon Jovi so great, they make us all happy. Don't get my wrong my friends, I love the happy, more optomistic stuff as well, I just get certain chills listening to These Days. It is perfect. Peace!
