It's too bad that 'hair band' is considered a negative term. Truthfully, most of the players from that era can actually play their instruments, and to compose a memorable hook requires lots of talents. Sure the lyrics are usually dumb, but musically they are memorable.
You should tell to the great Bleeding Purist that he's totally right. In his mind, Hair Metal had a great and long run thanks to Poison.

His head will explode if he ever notices Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Whitesnake, Malmsteen, Billy Sheehan, Tesla, David Lee Roth, Ted Nugent, Nuno Bettencourt, had something to do with the genre.

Take Slang, it's a great album! but it's basically DL's These Days. They went back to their 80's sound and produced a great album by the name of Euphoria, it tanked. After BJ was so succesfull with Crush they employed much of the same generational producars and songwriters, tried their hand at some drumloops in their songs and out came X.

Weird......
Dont forget that after Lost Highway, Def Leppard released Songs from the Sparkle Lounge which had a duet with country singer as the lead single (which I happen to like).

I love Def Leppard though. They are my second favourite band and I happed to LOVE Adrenalize. In fact I like it more than Pyromania. Nothing beats Hysteria though. I also really enjoyed Euphoria too, it was a shame it tanked. Not a huge fan of Slang... I even prefer Songs from the Sparkle Lounge over it. I dont even have X or Yeah.

I like Def Leppard -well some - Im not a huge fan of their "tinny sound" or Joe Elliotts voice.

Do they copy Jovi? well, when love and hate collide on a greatest hits album says it all after Jovi released Always for theirs!

they have some good songs do def leppard but to me they aint bad. Nothing amazing.

Also got a "download" of Blood On The Bricks yesterday and listening to it now.
It has Bon Jovi stamped all over it. 1 or 2 tracks aside this could have made a great Jovi album but it would have needed to be released maybe inbetween SWW and NJ as its a sound that Jovi got away from with KTF.

Will def get some more Aldo Nova - I love that early 90s rock sound.

X has some good songs (Long Long Way To Go and You're So Beautiful are standouts) in it, but overall the album is not great.

Yeah is a fun album.

Long Long way to go was given to Radio stations to play under a false name.
The band were concerned that it would never be played under the real name!

Default stuff

Love 'Blood on the Bricks' - always regarded it as New Jersey Part 3 after 1) The Original and 2) The Demos.

'Hey Ronnie' remains one of my top 5 fave ballads ever written.

Would be hugely surprised it Jon was plumming it for GH songs!!!

Really? You don't think producing a hair band album in 1992 had anything to do with it? The genre was already over.

You are confusing surviving through the genre with being a hair band simply for being a band during the time submitting to the fashion standards of the late 80's. Doesn't work that way. It really depends on your definition of the term, which for you is obviously any band who existed at the time.

Def Leppard predates the genre. They did their thing by setting standards up until Adrenalize. Notice the differences between High N Dry, Pyromania, and Hysteria..but the lack of it in Adrenalize. Bad move.

Guns N Roses set their own trend and actually helped lay the foundation for the demise of the genre and helped pave the way for grunge.

Whitesnake..... are you American?

Malsteem... Guitar virtuoso, not a hair band.

Billy Sheehan is a bass virtuoso associated mostly with DLR's band and Mr Big, a band who simply existed during the time.

David Lee Roth, don't be retarded. Van Halen also predates the genre and set their own trend. Yeah, the imitations that resulted in the late 80's could be attributed to them, but it doesn't make DLR or VH a Hair Band.

Ted Nugent... you are definitely just retarded or taking the piss.

Nuno Bettencourt and Extreme should never have been tagged with that label and stood to transcend the era. Many bands like them suffered because of unfair tagging.

Most Hair Bands deserved to die when they did.

Who cares if Def Leppard didn't start as a Hair Metal band? They made Hair Metal music later (their best known material), that's the point.

Guns N' Roses had a raw sound, with heavy Punk influences (just like early Mötley Crüe).
In a time where labels were looking for the "next Bon Jovi", Guns N' Roses opened the doors for Punk-influenced hairbands like L.A. Guns, Faster Pussycat, Dangerous Toys, Junkyard, Love/Hate, etc.
If Guns N' Roses didn't exist, Hair Metal would have died earlier.

Mr. Big wasn't a hairband? My god, you're clueless. They were always associated with the genre. Tons of hairbands sounded and looked like this:
Whitesnake didn't start as hairband but the fact is the self-titled album is their only legacy. Will you deny it?

Malmsteen? Yeah, definitely Malsmteen didn't release Hair Metal-influenced songs:
Damn Yankees was a Hair Metal band, that's why I named Ted Nugent.

Sorry dude, tags are tags. When the music critics and casual audience say you play "x" music, then you're a "x" band.

If you think Hair Metal ruled the american market between 1983 and 1991 because bands like Poison and Warrant, then you're dumber than a stone.

There were tons of popular Rock bands at the time which weren't hairbands. The Black Crowes, Jane's Addiction, The Cult, Living Colour, Faith No More, Queensr˙che, etc, are all good examples.

the Sexx
