Did someone drop you on your head as a child? This is a Bon Jovi post board which is more or less a form of Fun, Entertainment, and a Hobby. This is not our full-time jobs or careers so everything doesn't have to be spot on 100% of the time. This band has been around for 30 years dating back to a time when an internet didn't exist and a lot of fans go off of memory.

It's about sharing ideas, theories, and information. I love debating theories. If Bon Jovi wrote 50 songs for an album and someone stated that it was probably because they wanted it to be a double album, it's starts a discussion on here. That's the purpose of such a forum. Other fans will join in to debate and then we'll base a conclusion off of facts. We are not robots and it's called a conversation. Why was DARFILA changed? No one on here knows at this point but I love reading and discussing reasons why and some really good and interesting responses came up. And sometimes those response could lead into other discussions or concluded other theories surrounding other topics.

Just because your personal experiences or the experiences of a certain few always end up in a feud, it shouldn't dictate what the rest of us on here experience.

With you and a few others posting less, this place has been nothing but a paradise lately. You're a smart guy and it's a shame that you have such a negative disposition all the time.

BTY, Excellent info Ice. I'm just catching up on this now and I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all this and provide examples.

One question that I think you answered but why does it need to be louder for radio? I'll check out "loudness war" a little later tonight when I have more time.

Radio transmission are always compressed to make the songs, speech and commercials equally loud. The more there are dynamics within a song, the harder it is for the listeners to hear, for example in a car, where most people still listen to the radio. If the songs weren't compressed, one would be really loud (like modern tracks) and one very quiet (usually older ones that aren't so compressed to begin with). There are also limits on how much information can be transmitted via radio waves. And, the louder your station is, the better. It jumps out when dialing between stations.

When you listen to your iTunes on random without gain compensation, you hear how the radio would sound like. One song's loud, the other quiet and you need to adjust the volume all the time to keep the percieved volume even.

Most have also noticed that when you're watching TV, the commercials seem to be a lot louder thatn the actual program. It's because the commercials are compressed "flat", ie. made as loud as possible. So even when you're not touching the volume controls, the commercials are louder than anything else to make you notice them.

Wait! I think I do this with my mixes now, esp live ones. I use a program called MP3 Gain. All I do is drag all the songs into this program, select a level, and then hit go. All the songs come out somewhat even in volume.

Even with the new Deluxe songs, they were at a 98 and I had the other leaked ones at 95 so I wanted them balanced out. After, when I look at them in Nero, the levels are now set bigger.... but if you go too high it sounds distorted.

Is that what you are referring to?

Pretty much. Sounds like you're compressing the songs flat or normalizing the volume, but it's hard to say without seeing the soundwave before and after. But yeah, sounds about right.

I went through a phase of using that program some years ago when I had a 500mb MP3 player. (2005?) I used it so I could actually hear some of the songs. It's good for what it is but you gotta watch out for compressing them flat out, like Ice said. There is a "don't clip" function on there so you can max the volume out equally between the songs without damaging the dynamics, though the volume won't make passed around 91/92.
