Tlfvr...
'This Left Feels Very Right'!
Maybe that would have worked equally well as a title, for this is one very good album.
After the magnificent "These days" in '95 and the equally brilliant "Destination Anywhere" in '97,I thought Bon Jovi(collectively and solo) were making their finest musical statements. All of the albums up to then were progressions, and,I had very high hopes for what was to come next.
In 2000,we got that next step. "Crush" however was deflating, and save for a handful of good tunes,it felt like a step backwards. "Bounce' was worse, even though most songs have some kind of melody,it just seemed poor in relation to the high watermark of the '90's work by the band. "TLFR" came at just the right time, and,I would definitely agree with the very positive reviews some posters have given it here.
Whether you like the album or not,it's causing debate,it's being talked about, and,it's different. Different to every other 'Greatest Hits' or Compilation ou there by so many other acts. Even if some fans feel it was a wasted exercise,at least the band believed in it and did something different, musically. For those if us who like it,it's an artistic step forward after the so-so previous 2 albums.
The ammount of different musical styles & moods on the albums is irresistible, and, actually, some tracks, like the re-worked "It's My Life","Bad Medicine" and especially the inspired version of "You Give Love a Bad Name" are as good,if not even better, than the originals. The whole album smacks of the band enjoying themselves, really having fun with exploring different styles with thier catalogue.
I was knocked out when I first heard it,it was just so enjoyable. Refreshing and vital in these days of the same-old same-old in the charts. It's simply Bon Jovi offering different takes on thier well known hits, and coming up with a hugely enjoyable romp through blues, soft jazz, rock, pop and even some crooning in thar'!
Brilliant!
