When current rock died, they made a country "influenced" record... which you gotta admit that WLOL and AOD were dangerously close to Keith Urban. Who was big 6 months-1 year before the Circle was released? U2 and Coldplay, right? Hence the Sha-la-la's in WWWB (U2) and the string breakdown before the bridge in Brokenpromiseland (Coldplay) - to be fair these are just gimmicky producing tricks. Even, the These Days era had Prostitute, which Jon was clearly trying to sound as much like Kurt Cobain as he possibly could. Really the rest, I can admit they were influenced as oppose to chasing fads. There is a fine line... and I am not saying I'm right, but it is how I see it.
This is a topic that could go round and round all day because there is that fine line & everyone has their own definition…..

IMO...

There is a difference between "chasing fads" vs "changing your sound & staying current" vs "being experimental" vs "being influenced"

I consider what Def Leppard did with Slang in the 90's, a fad chaser. Or what Kiss did in the 80's.

If you hear Creed or U2 in a Bon Jovi song, I wouldn't consider them Fad Chasers. Bon Jovi are not trying to make a U2 or Creed record and for me, that's the difference. I don't consider Love For Sale, chasing the Elvis fad.

I would say that Bon Jovi does jump on Band Wagons, however stay true to who they are. Sure they've experimented with different sounds and changed their sounds to stay current but they are no way chasing fads.

BTW, You could pick out any artist who has been around for a long time and find songs they emulate other artists.

DA didn't sound at all like a Oasis (which was big a few years earlier) or Blur record... I can't speak for the manics.

I am not saying it wasn't influenced by this or that, but as far as I can tell, he didn't knowingly copy someone else's sound.

No, it doesn't sound like Oasis in particular but it has a certain drive to it (DA and August 7) that could fit in that scene. And I Did not say that he just copied a style but I do hear similarities.
