What I am taking issue with is the apparent denial Jon is in. Or as Mimi phrased it better - he is securing his image, negating his 'rocker' past.
I'm saying that I don't think he's "negating his 'rocker' past" for the sake of his image in 2005. Nearly 20 years ago he said they had ventured into silly trend following to try to fit in where they really didn't. Okay, that's not exactly how he phrased it--he phrased it similarly to how he phrased it in this interview, which is the point. There hasn't been some kind of radical change other than he's more open about his life and beliefs now than he ever was before. Most of what Jon revealed of himself in the past is consistent with who he is today. As he's gotten older, he's gotten more comfortable and let more of himself be known, but it's not as if anyone who's followed his interviews as closely as I have is going to see some radically different person today than who he was 10 or 15 years ago. He didn't fit into the stereotypical image of a "rock star" then and he doesn't have to "negate" an image he never quite fit to begin with.
