Default Transcript of Radio-Interview with Jon Part 1 + Part 2

Someone from Backstage posted a transcript of the radio interview this morning with Jon. Here is part 1, I'll add part 2 as soon as I have it:

Transcript from Jon's interview with Matty - KISS108 Boston 7/15/03

I was able to tape it. So here goes! (I'll continue pt. 2 later)

(M) Is there any star in music that you would feel comfortable asking for an autograph?

(J) I remember getting Mark (?) autograph from Dire Straights. He borrowed a copy of my album Making Movies when I worked in the recording studio and I said yes as long as you autographed it for me.

(M)How about the Stones or something?

(J)When we opened for the Stones in 1995 we were playing the same stadiums and I wanted to open for them to have the memory and they said why? You're playing the same stadiums as we are and I said honestly all I wanted was a picture taken of my band and the Stones and we'll open for ya and they loved it because they didn't have to pay us.

(M)You're from NJ Jon. I don't think you played for free.

(J)No not for free but not what we would have got paid for for doing the same joints. But you are a fan. I've been a fan many times even as of late. Tom Waitts is huge and I finally got to see him live on the last tour. An after show, which I would never do. If the Beatles were playing in my town I'd ask em to play in my back yard. Hard pressed to get me to go out anymore. I still am a fan.

(M)A lot of our listeners don't know Tom Waitts, but look him up on the iternet.

(J)No geeeez he's one of the great songwriters.

(M) He appears in movies once in a while too.

(J) He's a fine actor too. He played in Dracula and a few things like that. People think that Springsteen wrote Jersey girl...... Tom Waitts wrote Jersey Girl.

(M)I was gonna ask ya about that. That's the perfect lead in right there. Are you a Springsteen guy being from NJ?

(J)Yeah, sure. If you weren't your taxes went up.

(M)Last night he opened at the Meadowlands.

(J)It's tonight. Tonight's his first night.

(M)We were talking about this yesterday on the air Jon. Springsteen's doing 10 shows! You guys ..... how many nights could you do at the Meadowlands?

(J)We're doing .... we could have done 3 but there's only 2 available thanks to him. We decided to do the 2 because pre season football is too close. We could do 3 let's call it and he's doing 10!

(M)It's insane. Who could do 10? The Stones?

(J)No, no, no. The Stones did 1.

(M)They could have done more.

(J)No, no I'm not being fecesious (sp) here. On this tour they did 1. With all due respect they've been here a lot. They did 1. They could have done more if they could have and Bruce is doing 10!

(M)That's insane. That's 600,000 seats.

(J)Pretty close to it.

(M)And what does he get per ticket? $100 or so?

(J)$75 bucks.

(M)That's on the low end. He could charge a lot more if he wanted to.

(J)He could.

(M)Oh man, the tshirts. Wouldn't you like just a bit of the tshirts alone? So you're coming to.......forget him he's not on the phone, you are. So you're coming to Gillette when?

(J)Like next Tuesday a week from now.

(M)No that soon.

(J)I think so. Detroit's Saturday then we have Sun and Mon off . I think we play Tuesday.

(M)Holy cow! You're absolutely right. The 22nd. We have a contest coming up, we're giving away tickets but there's also a special deal before the show a tailgate party and limited edition CD. That's the CD from when you were here right? on Landsdow Street. That's nice. It wasn't exacxtly acoustic. I don't know what you'd call it.

(J)Intimate.

(M)You were plugged in.

(J)It was all acoustic but there was an electric piano and a bass. They were acoustic guitars, they weren't electric guitars. But yeah, we were very comfortable in that format. It was a lot of fun.

(M)Do you swing back and forth or do you have a preference?

(J)We're very capable of playing accoustically and playing those venues. As a matter of fact we're doing an accoustic record next if you will. Couple new songs and couple covers and a complete reworkings of this catalog that;setting rather up there and it's years now reintroducing stuff...

(M)Yeah, how many CDs you got you could pull from at this point in your career?

(J)Man now this is my 12th album. I've got a lot .. It's 20 years down the road.

(M)Wow! Pearl Jam did a show here I don't know if you read about it. They did a show 3 nights at the Tweeter Center (Jon takes a sip of his coffee here) and they decided that they wouldn't repeat. So for 3 nights in a row they did different stuff. But I wouldn't like that if I was seeing you. I'd wanna hear the hits. I would. It's fun to hear other stuff, but you wanna hear the hits.

(J)Yup. I imagine that the real hard core fan would have liked that especially if they went to all 3 shows. That's a very unique approach to a show.

(M)that's a Pearl Jam kind a thing.... U2 might pull that off. So but do you change the playlist?

(J)Dramatically. The lists are an idea. I've only written them in pencil and I make it the night of and it changes as the night goes on.

(M)And do you end with the same?

(J)I don't even do that. The only thing that I'll do on this tour is I've been opening with Bounce and I think it's just that one song getting your monitors right and then everything else is up for grabs.

(M)And what about LOAP?

(J)We do the staples. Sure. People wanna hear 'em and I still like playing LOPA, Bad Name or Wanted but um then anything is open to suggestion. You know our fan base know that they'll write it on little banners or what have you asking to play a song and I'll go yeah I know that and turn around to the band, call it out and it makes it fun for you, keeps the roadies on their toes, keeps it fun for the band and the crowd love it.

(M)They have different guitars to go running out with.

(J)Yeah otherwise these guys are laying in the hammick, with a big ham sandwich back there.. they don't know what's going on.

Transcript from Jon's interview with Matty - KISS108 Boston 7/15/03 Part 2

(M)Do you ever do LOAP early in a set?

(J)Depending. The song is such a staple of the band's career it can go anywhere comfortably.

(M)You get the hand waving do ya?

(J)That's right. Our shows are very interactive. You have the shows that people sit down they they'll shhhhhh ya. Then you have the ones that are very aerobic. That's pretty much what we do.

(M)You're right about the Bon Jovi show.

(J)I'ts a good time.

(M)Another thing Jon. On a personal note. Not to sound too feminine. You don't seem to be aging. I'm guessing Oil of Ole. (LOL)

(J)I'm guessing a deal with the devil 20 years ago.

(M)God Almighty you have not aged. It's freakish. I'm telling ya Jon. I been looking at ya and I go what's with this guy?

(J)Don't put me too close to the lights, I'll melt. You know what Matty come out and run 2 1/2 hours on the stage and then 1 1/2 hours in the gym every morning and let me know how you feel. I pay for my sins in the morning. That's the way I look at it.

(M)It's freaking me out that you're coming next week. I thought it was a couple of weeks away. Now I have to move my schedule around.

(J)It's the day before Patriots camp. That much I knew.

(M)I'll tell ya what, without stopping or skipping any, name all the automobiles that you own. Go, quickly!

A Lincoln Navigator, Viper, 57 Chevy Nomad and a Vet.

(M)That's all? I thought you had like 30. That's it?

(J)And my Viper's for sale. Actually I bought it up there. Anybody wants to buy a great Viper, I'm gonna sell my Viper.

(M)You would need some kind of radar detector I would imagine.

(J)It's a cop trapper. It's a great car but I'm done with it.

(M)So you only have like 3 or 4 cars? I thought you had like 30 or 40 cars.

(J)No. That's another rockstar cliche kinda thing. When you get this old you just get airplanes. (LOL)

(M) OK, then, name your planes. (LOL) Do you have a G4?

(J)No I got something cooler called a Falcon 2000. Now we're talking.

(M)Now we're talking. Jon it's always great talking to ya. And all the years doing promotions we appreciate it.

(J)You guys have always been great to us. So we look forward to coming up. We'll see ya on Tuesday.
Thanks buddy.

(M)Thanks Jon. He's a very sweet guy. He's so cool. Cars, what was I thinking, it's planes!
