I don't quite understand it, either. The song really has nothing to do with the troops other than the one line "I'll go the distance..." because of course, they've literally GONE the distance to Iraq. How in the heck can we connect seeing a red dress through the night to patriotism? Unless there's some sort of hidden symbolism there that I just haven't realized.
