Yeah, being a bass player, it's only appropriate for my first post to be in this thread

From what I've seen in the old Bon Jovi videos, it's obvious that Alec was lacking the grooviness and "feel" expected from a good bass player. Maybe it's hard to explain for someone who doesn't play bass or is not a musician, but it's obvious to someone like me. There's no comparison between Huey McDonald and Alec, the former is the superior bassist by far. The accenting, the feel, etc. everything is much better with Hugh for sure.
And someone posted above that the band is very sloppy these days compared to the old days and if Alec were here now, he would fit in better. I don't know what sloppiness is in question here but it's definitely not from the rhythm section I can tell you that. Bon jovi backline of bass-drums-keys is very solid these days. They lock in pretty well. If it's Sambora that's being pointed out, I wouldn't know about that. But the backline is pretty tight. And Huey McDonald is a big part of that. That guy has good feel, even the 16ths he plays have a nice groove to them, playing just behind the beat a little bit. Makes it sound good.
The general problem with Bon Jovi live sound these days is the general problem of the recording industry. The terribly loud mixes. You can't easily distinguish instruments and hear them clearly because of that. Which sucks of course. Their post 2000's albums are mixed terribly. You don't need to be an audophile to hear that either, just listen to Live From London and then some recent DVD. You'll realize that how crystal clear the sound of the former is, whereas the new ones are static all over the place.
