METALLICA's ULRICH: 'St. Anger' Makes The Black Album Sound Like BON JOVI

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has told the Rocky Mountain News that he understands why understand why some fans were initially thrown by the "thrashing speed-metal" nature of the band's latest album, "St. Anger".

"It's so beating. I can understand now how challenging the record was," he said. "Compared to a song like 'Wherever I May Roam', it sounds like World War III. It makes the 'Black Album' sound like BON JOVI or something.

"I can understand that some of the people into the more straightforward things we've done can be scared[listening to 'St. Anger']. It's OK to be scared and overwhelmed and challenged. I'm proud that we didn't (wimp) out. A couple of times we kinda set out to make a record that was raw and a little more aggressive and we kinda (wimped) out. We started cleaning things up, we started putting James' (Hetfield's) vocals in tune. We left 'St. Anger' as raw as it was."

And longtime fans knew it wasn't out of character for the band. "…And Justice For All' is borderline unlistenable to my ears," Ulrich said of the band's classic 1988 release. Then again, "when we put 'Fade to Black' on our second record ['Ride the Lightning'], a lot of the hardcore fans were freaking out - 'Oh my God, an acoustic guitar, they've lost it!' That was what, 21 years ago or something? For a band that lost it 21 years ago, I think we're doing OK."

LOL... Just thought comparing The Black Album to Bon Jovi is really a load of shit. The Black Album is a masterpiece and IMO is as good if not better than any Bon Jovi album.

Yeah and Bob Rock was producing the Black album right? I read an article about making the Black album and there the guys said "Everyones afraid that Bob's gonna make us sound like Bon Jovi. Glad that didn't happen"

To be honest when it comes to reputation Bon Jovi is way behind Metallica at this moment plus I think that when you're a die hard fan of Metallica you enjoy a Metallica show more then when you're a die hard Bon Jovi fan at a Bon Jovi show as Metallica just gives better shows.

What you wrote down is a subjective opinion.
Why would a die hard bon jovi fan enjoy a Bon Jovi show less then a die hard metelica fan a metelica show. I think all die hard fans enjoy the show of their band and that someone that is just going to see them for fun can talk about enjoying it more and better shows!

Bon Jovi is always good. When you're fan, sure you like some concerts better than other, but overall they're always good. It's a combination. Metallica can be the same, I wouldn't know. I've never been to a Metallica concert before.

When you read about reviews from die hard Bon Jovi fans you see lots are (a bit) disappointed in the performance of Bon Jovi and their setlists. When you read the reviews from die hard Metallica fans most they do is praising them for their suddenly changed stage performances and their setlists which always end with 2 extremely rare songs.

Sebastiaan
