Yeah, so the story that Jon's been telling about the song adds up. He's always emphasized that David desperately wanted to have a hand in songwriting as well and he was writing that one with him saying "the verses were great, but the chorus was just never working". Then Richie joined the sessions, suggested the chorus of a solo song he had left over, called "if you were in these arms tonight" and they fixed the chorus.
They talk about it here, starting at 5:15:

The final version is definitely more powerful, but this one has its own charm and I found it more romantic... sigh

I liked that.
Funny isn’t it when a song starts you know and you start singing but the words are different!
Some good lyrics in water into wine.
They need to do another box set and unleash everything they’ve ever recorded no matter how rough, short or absolute garbage. I’m sure there a few cracking tracks that know one knows anything about.
