Yeah, so the story that Jon's been telling about the song adds up. He's always emphasized that David desperately wanted to have a hand in songwriting as well and he was writing that one with him saying "the verses were great, but the chorus was just never working". Then Richie joined the sessions, suggested the chorus of a solo song he had left over, called "if you were in these arms tonight" and they fixed the chorus.
