Pawnbrokers used to be far more common here in the northeast cities than they are these days.

You could shop at a pawnshop - and buy all those things preety cheaply that people pawned (hocked) and couldn't redeem.

So Tommy's guitar probably got sold to someone else since Tommy couldn't buy it back out of hock.

It was sold to Jimmy Shoes.
He needed something to do while he was in the wheelchair.

Speaking of sad, Kathleen - it's sad to think that Tommy probably coudn't afford to get his guitar back.

I had friends that were so poor back in the 60s - that when they got married they bought their wedding rings at a pawnshop.

Now figure that someone had to have pawned those wedding rings for cash and then went past the time allotted to buy them back (otherwise they wouldn't be for sale). Now that was sad to me.

Someone should write a song about how sad it is that Tommy couldn't get his guitar back...

I'm thinking that's the job for a quality Jovi tribute band, maybe one with a member who could design the sleeve themselves. Now if only that kind of band existed...

That great songmaterial! Sounds like a Tom Waits song. Actually he wrote:
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon

In his song Hold On. I wonder if he knew your friends

There's actually a great old country song about a ring making the rounds with stops at a pawn shop . . . hmm Tammy Wynettte maybe? Now I have to go search.

EDIT - Wow, I was pretty close to right. It was George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Take a look at these lyrics!

Golden Ring

(T.W.)
In a pawn shop in Chicago
On a sunny summer day
A couple gazes at the wedding rings
There on display

(G.J)
She smiles n' nods her head
As he says, "Honey that's for you,
It's not much, but it's the best
That I can do."

Chorus-both
Golden rings (golden ring) with one tiny little stone
Waiting there (waiting there) for someone to take you home
By itself (by itself) it's just a cold metallic thing
Only love can make a golden wedding ring

(T.W.)
In a little wedding chapel later on that afternoon
An old upright piano plays that old familiar tune
(G.J.)
Tears roll down her cheeks
And happy thoughts run through her head
As he whispers low, "With this ring, I thee wed."

Chorus- both
Golden ring (golden ring) with one tiny little stone
Shining ring (shining ring) now at last it's found a home
By itself (by itself) it's just a cold metallic thing
Only love can make a golden wedding ring

Ooo-ooo

(T.W.)
In a small two room apartment
As they fought their final round
He says, "You won't admit it,
But I know you're leavin' town."

(G.J.)
She says, "One thing's for certain,
I don't love you any more."
And throws down the ring
As she walks out the door

Chorus- both
Golden ring (golden ring) with one tiny little stone
Cast aside (cast aside) like the love that's dead and gone
By itself (by itself) it's just a cold metallic thing
Only love can make a golden wedding ring

(Both)
In a pawn shop in Chicago
On a sunny summer day
A couple gazes at the wedding rings
There on display,
Golden ring.

Now THAT'S a country song!
