Basically he was doing the interview on the news and one of the guys played back a part of Thank you for loving me, and then a part of I'll be there for you (I had never noticed how similar they were, musically speaking, prior) and they had a good laugh about it and Richie commented that "They went right back in and ripped themselves off, because they're allowed to, and they're all going to sue themselves". But what I found REALLY interesting about it was that he basically said "I'm going to put this one on Jon" or something. It was obviously Jon's line I guess.

I didn't know that! Glad I wasn't the only one wondering...though I suppose it was rather obvious.

Richie wrote I'll Be There For You mostly on his own. Thank You was written mostly by Jon. So, Jon ripped off Richie.

"I'll take the hit, but I ain't gonna take the fall" ~ Two Story Town (which sounds a lot like Out Of Bounds in the chorus )

I've definetely gotten the feeling IBTFY was more a Richie song. Has this ever been confirmed?

I can unconfirm that for you. LOL Jon on CHUM FM in December 1990 talked about the idea of the song (Dorothea) and how in his mind's eye she's the greatest thing that ever walked. He also said that after they wrote it, he woke her up to play it for her and she cried.

Also, Sambo Chris can probably point you to an interview where Richie claimed he wrote most of Thank You for Loving Me, but that conflicts with an Up Close radio interview where Jon talked about hesitating even taking that one to Richie because it was so easy to write. They didn't have anything else to do, so he did take it to Richie so he could be involved with it too and Richie was very happy that he did.

No one said Jon didn't have a hand in the song hence the co-writing credit but I've always felt it was a Richie song. He's often named it as one of his favourites, played it on his solo tour and now sings it himself live with Bon Jovi. It just feels more like Richie than Jon, I get the same feeling with Wanted Dead Or Alive, although the whole cowboy image is a bit of a Jon thing it sounds more Richie's style musically. I may be totally wrong about both as no one knows who wrote what apart from the two of them and I no longer believe a word that comes out of either of their mouths so I guess we'll never know.

Exactly--which is why it's kind of pointless to speculate who wrote "the most." I'm only repeating what has been said about the writing process. I find the revelations they make about their writing to be very interesting.

I doubt any of us think that the process is truly 50/50 on every song, but they've written enough songs together that it probably balances out in the end. So why do people feel the need to say that one song is more a Jon song or more a Richie song? It's pretty obvious that fans aren't there are can only guess. Assigning our misconceptions about who wrote what is futile. I feel like IBTFY is more of a Jon song based on what he's said about Dorothea and based on the fact that he was the only one of the two in a committed relationship at the time. That doesn't make my feeling any more accurate than yours!

I would love it if one day they released a memoir about what they remember about writing each and every song. Now THAT would be an interesting book in my opinion!
