I think this is how they're going to sound regardless of who is the driver's seat. I don't think Shanks should be playing live but I'll take him over Bobby's guitar tones but I'll take Bobby over Shanks if it means a more varied setlist.
An album of songs with the quality, sound and guitars of Teardrop, WWYDF and Fingerprints????? I’d die for that, we’ve reached an agreement Don’t see it happening though and Shanks wouldn’t be able yo play the solos live...just look how Phil has to play Shanks’ THINFS solo and it’s not a difficult one to play.
Oh, and Bobby>Shanks any day

When it comes to guitar solos and guitar work, "can really play" is really not all that important. Lots of beloved players with tons of memorable leads under their belt aren't the greatest technical players. Shanks is not a bad player in technical terms, but what does that even mean? Can you hum the solo to Born To Be My Baby or even one by Malmsteen? One by Shanks or one by Ace Frehley? One by the guy from Nitro, or one by Mick Mars?

Yep. Just listen to BB King and the early blues players...absolutely fantastic. But it depends on what kind of music you’re playing. Richie fitted totally in with his bluesy but technical style; Phil X is technically very good but doesn’t have the sound or feeling for Jovi IMO, I’m still waiting for examples of Shanks being ‘technically good’ guitar-wise though

But we've talked about the solos he's played/recorded that you've enjoyed. If you enjoy those I'm not sure what proof you're looking for.

I don't really. They're serviceable but faceless. They certainly don't lift the song to new heights, something Richie did as recently as on I'm With You.

As we agree on, he’s a great producer, and those solos were produced in the studio with a lot of work, playing/pausing/trying again; I want to see what he can do in the natural live environment, and what I’ve seen so far is mediocre.

Fair enough I guess. I think melodically he composed those solos. They're not.....terribly HARD solos but they have a vibe and a character far more so than 90 percent of the post 2000 solos. Living with the Ghost is another solo I really enjoy. I just don't think he's bad enough at guitar that those are solos he recorded in multiple sessions.

I ll go one more step in to being super analytical :

I agree that probably Shanks is not as bad technically as to need multiple sessions to record his more interesting solos (like the ones found on BB as well as LWTG).

But what is possible is that he does not have the "musicality" or the "charisma" to produce such melodies on the fly. At the end of the day, most of his very nice solos seem well calculated. So I gues the opinion that "he is not as great a musician (in a live setting)" can be supported, especially if you compare him to Richie, Dave, Tico, Hugh, Phil and probably even Bobby. All those aforementioned musicians have showed at different occasions that they can create really cool licks/lines when jamming.

So the question finally revolves around improvisation and spotaneity. Which is an important part of musicianship. (not to lessen the value of composition and well-thought orchestration or sound engineering)

Could Liam ever properly sing though? His technique always seemed terrible although it suited the songs.
