I haven't heard the new Def Leppard album just the single 'Nine Lives' and it's one of the worst songs I've heard in ages. Ironically, the new Motley Cue song (Saints of Los Angeles) is a lot better.

I think Bon Jovi continues to outsell all of their 80's counterparts simply because they seem modern and not like a relic of the 80's. Bon Jovi have moved onto a level of mainstream acceptance where casual listeners see them as a current band that has older hits rather than an old band that makes new songs (the category where the general consensus has Def Leppard in).

*sigh* Why bring negativity, into something that was a really positive, upbeat thread?

Because JT's been getting WAY too cheery lately! LOL We ain't happy if we ain't bitchin'! We might lose the reputation we've worked so hard to acquire.

(Sorry, I'm in too good a mood to bitch about the band right now. If they come home and go back to the vanilla set lists for the final shows, I'll be ready to go again! Check with me in 6 weeks. )

I'd say what separates them from other similar bands or artists is there hability to write at least one hit/semi-hit per album (good or bad song is not an issue).

I don't think BJ gets more support from the label, they just do a better job at marketing themselves. The last album Jon left to the label was Bounce and as I recall he was very displeased with their handling of it so he hired DD advertising to do the campaign for HAND and they did the campaign for LH as well I believe.

Aside from that here is what I saw the last time I saw Van Halen and MC. A bunch of 45 to 50 year old men having a mid life crisis and trying to recapture their youth. That's how it came across to me. These weren't solid serious musicians with a bunch of past hits that they still give proper reverance to but have moved past onto different/ relevant things, these guys were trying to relive their glory days, which would be fine if they were willing to just say so, but instead they tacked on a few half baked "new" tracks and say here we are with brand new stuff, see we can still do this.

Bon Jovi on the other hand has just kind of flowed into the present, they still do justice to the old classics but they plug in the new relevant hits as well and somehow it all fits together. For some reason rock stardom "fits" Jon and the boys like comfortable jeans, maybe it's because they don't try so hard to "look" and "act" like rock stars, they just do what they do and are what they are.
I do agree that the live show as always is what has carried BJ more than anything. No one does live better than they do night in night out, especially this time out. I haven't seen them this good live since the 90's and as of late the sets have been downright awesome.

That is exactly what has separated Bon Jovi from the rest for me--they consistently make music I enjoy. I don't LOVE every song or every album, but their worst is usually better than some other artists' best. Also, because they write their own material, you know the quality will be consistent. The live show is always incredible.

As was said earlier, Bon Jovi definitely gets much more label support than DL, but they've earned it. They have a proven track record to warrant support. I think it really came into play in 2000. There was no heavy push behind Crush. It sold very well on the strength of It's My Life. Let's face it - That brought on a whole new resurgance of the band and basically made them legends. The success they've had post-2000 is amazing. Once the label saw just how massive and loyal their fan base truly was, of course they got behind them.
IMO Aerosmith and Van Halen are not really couterparts... they came way before Bon Jovi

That's bullshit. Just because you like it doesn't mean it's true for everyone. Actually, I really think most of the bands who try to stay relevant fail miserably. Be it Metallica, Leppard, Europe, or whoever. Bands who do what they like manage to still release decent music. And I include the tripe A in this namely: Aerosmith, AC/DC(ok, it's 8 years since Stiff upper Lip but that's miles better than Crush or any subsequent Jovi album), and Alice Cooper.

i think there separated because ulike any other artist ive loved never released an album where i hate every track, for example some of bowies later albums were crap yet i list him as one of my favourite bands. Also for me its there live performance and the fact they broke their "hair band" and 80's styles, jon cutting his hair, and the different music of faith and these days dealing with more deep problems than their 80's rock. Also theyve mananged to stay current, we may not like some of thier latest stuff(although i think HAND is brilliant and some of lH is great). They have said theyre gonna come back with a rocking album which is great. Hoping for something between HAND and bounce.

Oh and of course they are just the best;P
