Elvis and Guns & Roses were considered dangerous. Bon Jovi were always extremely safe.

Teenagers especially? Easiest answer ever. You need to place yourself in a highly competetive surrounding, and are insecure as shit. There's little room for mercy.

Take I'll be There For You. Massive hit, much loved by fans but lyrically it's a travesty of a song. Ditto Never Say Goodbye or I'd Die For You (chorus). No credible artist would be seen dead writing or singing those songs.

Don't get me started on Thank you for Loving Me or All About Loving You.

Songs like Sweet Child of Mine, With or Without You, Nothing Else Matters, Every Rose Has Its Thorn are far better songs.

Most Jovi haters would be amazed to hear songs like Hey God, I Believe etc. which I think show a much better side to the band than some of the (other) shit they have released as singles and are better known for.

I'd say the songs listed above are all saved by the way they're being delivered, none of them have particularly great lyrics. The lyrics to Sweet Child are by no means any better than the eighties cheese Bon Jovi came up with, hence most of Guns N' Roses having a problem with the song.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

I'd argue that while there are some less than fantastic lyrics, there is nothing in there quite as bad as:

"I'll be there for you, these five words i swear to you,
When you breath I wanna be the air for you,
I'll be there for you,
I'd live and I'd die for you, steal the sun from the sky for you"

Or

"I didn't mean to miss your birthday baby,
I wish I'd seen you blow those candles out"

They aren't the only shit lyrics in the song, just some of the worst.

The delivery turns a cringe inducing cliche-fest into something very listenable.

The other songs I've listed are nowhere near as bad in my opinion.

I don't see why the songs lyrics get trashed so much. If you listen to music on the radio today (which I try not to), the lyrics are all nothing special. Like you said, it's all in the delivery. If Bon Jovi were to sing a Coldplay song, it'd get trashed for having lousy lyrics, but for some reason, the way Chris Martin sings it, it's OK.

Bon Jovi just writes songs with no hidden messages that are easy to understand. Talk about songs that are poorly written - Country and hip-hop. Good grief, how do you people listen to that crap?

There is a valid point in there, a lot of jovi songs are bashed because they are Jovi. But I can't recall a Coldplay song as poor lyrically as some of the Bon Jovi songs.

Maybe you can half excuse the 80s as them being young but when someone writes Thank You For Loving Me and Save the World right after Lie to Me, Letting You Go, Every Word Was A Piece of My Heart and It's Just Me, you have to question the writer.

Those four songs are fairly straightforward in their message but lyrically they piss all over the cliched shite Jon has been guilty of writing.

"I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the ties that bind
Because you're mine, I walk the line" - I Walk The Line (Johnny Cash)

What's wrong with country?

Unless you were thinking country as in Keith Urban, Shania Twain etc which, as Tom Petty put it, are less like country and more like "bad rock bands with a fiddle".

Though I do like a bit of Shania Twain every now and then. My first crush an' all.

I'm talking Modern Country not Classic Country. Johnny Horton is one of my favorite singers ever.
