It's a debate no-one can win, I'm of the belief that it's useless putting music into genres. Firstly, everyone has their own definition of 'rock' as demonstrated on this thread. This means everyone will have their own idea of what constitutes a Bon Jovi rock song, the result will probably yet another disagreement but its unlikely either party will be more right than the other.

Then there is the terrible idea of deciding what genre of band Bon Jovi is. According to wikipedia they are hard rock, heavy metal and glam rock. The thought of classing Jovi as heavy metal along with the likes Led Zeppelin makes me laugh, but some would argue against me. Others would say for the last 10 years Bon Jovi have made pop music and are therefore a pop band, but does this cancel out the 15 years of music before that? My point is that there are so many genres to try and fit 25 years worth different songs into that there is no definition everyone will be 100% happy with.

This just demonstrates what happens when you try and fit something as diverse as music into little catergories and boxes:

You end up with a huge list of possible subgenres that are completely impractical, bare in mind that is just rock genres, theres also tons more:

Yeah - i agree. My brother + i always laugh at 'Pop' being used as a label for a genre of music. Pop = Popular, so theoretically anything that is popular would be 'Pop' music. No one considers Jazz as Pop music but in the 1920's + 1930's, Jazz was Pop music. In the 1980's when 'hair metal' flourished, that brand of hard rock was Pop music. Yet bands that don't experience commercial success can + have been labeled as Pop b/c of their sound.

Popular music is everything except classical, national, religious, traditional or ballroom music. Pop music is a musical genre on its own.

I still maintain that at the core, Bon Jovi has always been a pop-rock band. Over the years, they've melded that core with various other genres, like so:

1980s: Pop-rock-hard-rock-metal
KTF Era: Pop-rock-hard rock-blues rock
TD Era: Pop-rock-hard rock-blues rock-adult contemporary
Crush Era: Pop-rock-adult contemporary
Bounce Era: Pop-rock-hard rock (sort of) -modern rock-adult contemporary
HAND Era: Pop-rock-modern rock-adult contemporary-country (on one song)
LH: I'm sure it's obvious
Circle Era: Pop-Rock-modern rock-adult contemporary

So really they've always been the same band, it's just that there's been a notable lack of hard rock and metal elements this decade.

Hate to sound like a cock, Paul, but ever heard any blues? Don't really hear blues in any of Bon Jovi's '90s music. I don't think being a bit more sad and introspective makes it bluesy. There's actually more on New Jersey (Love For Sale is a blues song, and 99 In The Shade and Homebound Train have little influences...) and obviously Stranger In This Town.

Other than that, spot on.

I have to agree completely here - there is some blues influence mostly due to Southside Johnny than anything. But that is not the predominant sound you hear.

If we're just listing the songs with harmonica, then These Days is included too

I dunno, maybe I'm mixing up my genres a bit, but I would regard bands like Led Zeppelin and Cream to have a blues-rock sound (and Black Sabbath too, but a heavily mutated version of it), and I reckon you can see elements of it in Bon Jovi's 90s material. The fact that they used pianos more than synths is that period adds to that impression too
