I think that these people don't know the other stuff that Jovi has done...they only know what they hear on the radio and they don't get into the vaults like we as die hard fans do. That's just my opinion.

I've had people laugh at me, tell me I was crazy....I'm used to it. Then there's other's that I have let listen to the "unheard" of stuff and they were quite shocked that it was Jovi.

I used to be embarassed in the early stages of my fandom only because I was afraid of being put down. I had no clue if liking them was a bad thing back then. It took some time, but I grew out of it and I'm now a very proud Jovi fan.

I remember this one time when this guy found out I liked Bon Jovi. The scene played out as follows:
Guy (looking at my BJ t-shirt): You like Bon Jovi?
Me: Yeah.
Guy: You're kidding! Hair metal sucks!
Me: They've moved beyond hair metal, you know. In fact, people are complaining that they're not metal enough.
Guy: Don't you know that music-wise, the 80s were the worst decade ever?

Needless to say, I was insulted. He was probably into s**tty Nirvana music or something.

have to agree about the bad press and all........

frankly if there are any rockers out there who do think that Jovi is "pop" metal, i would have to disagree -- that's a Bryan Adams category -- the Jersey album was as heavy as anything around at that time......so they write ballads, and even their heavy songs talk about "love" issues (Lay ur hands, Medicine etc.) but that was then -- after KTF there songs have moved away from that (Older, These days, Undivided etc.)

ive mentioned before, every album is very different from the next......in sound, in content........KTF is no way like TD -- Crush and Bounce are the only ones i would say are closely related, but still diff't -- Sting & Mariah get acclaim, and every song they put out sounds the same.........

dare i make a comparison? for those "rockers" out there who knock Jovi as being a nothing band, but regard the Beatles as the greatest band ever (cause they are) look at the similarties........both started with songs heavy in the love content.......later talk about social things, life issues, whatever, you get the point -- so they don't curse or have to talk about death to make their song seem edgier........i just don't get it myself -- disclaimer: i am in no way comparing my beloved Beatles with Jovi -- just noting some similarities and the hypocrisy of those who like the Beatles, but think Jovi is crap...........

as for me, love Jovi, but i do listen to heavier stuff (metallica, ozzy) and dare i say, stuff not popular with people my age (20s) such as Buddy Holly, doo-wop, motown, you get the point -- that is a fan of music, real music though....not this sampled, synthesized pop-junk........

I find that Classic Rock tends to be quite fair to Bon Jovi. Some of the reviews are a bit pants, but on the whole they get a good mention every month. I'm pretty sure the editor's a Bon Jovi fan too, which will definitely help.

I know Im sort of answering my own question with this post but these are some thoughts I had while reading the posts in here...

I really think the man gets a bad rap though. He may seem to show a bit of vanity towards his appearance and stardom and his ego may shine through a little from time to time but I think he is a pretty cool, decent guy. He never annoys me like some celebrities do and I don't think he's as wimpy as some people say.. He does have a fair amount of rock n roll attitude and his spotlight persona is possibly more toned down for ladies. I say its more to do with the fact that he was born with (as judged by woman.. not by myself) good looks...

I think its sort of how it used to be with Brad Pitt and Jonny Depp. These guys are a hit with the ladies and are all labelled as "pretty boys" to some extent. Therefore its somewhat of an embarrasment for guys to like them. Before Fight Club came out, would a guy have admitted to like Brad Pitt as an actor (let alone their favourite)... It doesn't matter how talented they are, liking them is almost like saying "he's hot" or as someone pointed out "I like Bon Jovi" could sound like "I like Jon" to some (since the media convince the public that Jovi are a one man band anyway).

On that topic, I guess the media doesn't help either. Jon's hair is often the focus in reviews of particular albums ao and magazine articles. Not necccessarily Jon's fault but since Jovi were labelled as 'hair metal,' it almost appears that when KTF came out, the critics spent more time with their jaws dropped staring at the damn booklet thinking "where did his hair go" than they did listening to the album and giving it a fairer review than "Jovi have shorter hair now... 2 stars for Jons haircut." Someone not into Jovi at the time would think of them as more obsessed with image than caring about their music..

On the topic of judging a band by their frontmen, I think Justin Hawkins is a pratt but I still like the Darkness. Also, Axl seems to have lost the plot but Guns are still one of my favourite bands for the work they did in the past (Im sure my grandkids will love Chinese Democracy when he releases it).

Anyways,,, Jon probably has a little something to do with it..

That's mainly because you got to know The Darkness when Justin was already a pratt, you've never know him any different. Jon Bon Jovi was a nice guy though, honest and serious when it came to music, and nowadays he's an arrogant twat who looks bored because "he's seen it all and thinks he's on top of the world." He's the one who always says they're a good band when performing, but doesn't notice that a lot of bands from his era are a lot better.

That's basicly why a lot of people are embarrassed about Jon Bon Jovi. Talking about how bad the music business is because of it's 3 minute pop songs, but releasing the same sort of music doesn't make your credibility any bigger. The same for a lot of things. Jon promises a lot, but doesn't make a lot of it come true. This boxset is the first thing in 4 years that Jon promised and actually came true.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Leaving the stupid groupie "I feel embarasse story" beside...
I have reached a point where I admire Jon for all the things you posted there. How can anyone be embarassed by somebody that has done everything he set to do. How can you blame someone who just doesn't find any new challange because he was challanged by everything and he managed to get over this challenges?
It's just ilogical...you people shuld maybe consult a doctor or look for a band like Milli Vanillie so you can feel even more embarassed and you have nice discussion topics.

I couldn't care less what people think of me for liking Bon Jovi. I've converted a few to my way of thinking along the way. What is there to be embarrassed about? If people don't like Bon Jovi, fine. That's their perogative. I don't care about other people's musical tastes, and don't give a shit if they care about mine, either.
