I personally don't care why other people don't like Bon Jovi. I like them and that's what makes me happy. I've been surprised lately though, how many people I know like them more than I thought they did. Everyone I work with knows how much I love BJ. I even have stickers that I had made with Jon's pic on them stuck on all my pens at work so that people know they are mine. Anyway, my general manager at my work likes them. It's funny, he'll come up to me and talk to me about the latest thing he saw on TV or whatever. And a few other people (guys who aren't even 20 yet) have mentioned to me lately that they like them too.

So....I think that some people like them more than they are willing to admit. And, the others who don't like them I don't care about their opinion. They like bands that noone will remember in 20 years. Not bands that will be releasing boxed sets to commemorate 20 years together.

Default why people dislike bon jovi

I think the main reason people dislike Bon Jovi is because of Jon. There are many girls that like him, but not many guys that do. He's too pretty for most guys to be able to like. Most guys aren't going to like Ricky Martin, Michael Bolton, boy bands, etc. Every Jovi video is going to feature a handsome, smiling Jon. Too much for most guys to stand. Most of my friends like bands like AC/DC. I think most folks thirty and older don't realize Bon Jovi is still making music, and those under thirty, are not familiar with Bon Jovi in the late 80's. Hair bands of the 80's are thought of very negatively these days, and Jon is probably the first one that most folks think of when you mention hair band. I think most folks like Richie, and aren't real familiar with the rest of the band.

Having said all that, I am proud to have been a Jovi fan since 1985. Good guys, good music, and awesome concerts. I follow the band like I do one of my sports teams; following their progress in the charts, trying to convince my friends to listen/watch them when on radio/tv. Can't wait to see them on tour next year. Jon

I get it quite a lot. But just think about how popular they were when SWW was released, back then it was like, you don't have this album... you suck! They were THE band!
But now they aren't as popular because the new bands these days play either nu-metal or pop band crap, it just isn't cool to listen to a rock group that was popular 15 years ago. A lot of musicians will respect Bon Jovi, but most of the public will just listen to the critisism and judge a band for their bad points.

Somewhere between 1987 and 1989 the band must have made a decision about their image.

At Castle Donnington in 1987 (yes I am showing my age!!!) JBJ spent most the set using a variety of swear words the most popular of which was motherf*ckers while on stage speaking to he crowd. At this time they were considered a metal band. By 1989 at Milton Keynes the whole band had changed. The live music was excellent but almost too good as it sounded polished where 2 years earlier it had been full of feedback and was sounded completely raw. JBJ was now smiley friendly with the crowd and all the bad language had gone and was replaced with cheesey lines aimed at the females.

I feel this has been reflected not in their music but in their image - look at his ridicuoulsy white teeth in the everyday video and they are always smiling (presumably at the girls!!) on stage. If you ask me this is why people don't like them very much because they should be a great rock band but this boy band cheesey niceness makes them fall short of the mark and people don't like it in the same way most fans on this forum dislike boy bands.

Look at U2 or the Chilli Peppers for how the complete music and image job should be done.

I saw U2 in concert and did not hear one swear word or anything else non family friendly. My teenager was with me. Bono even brought a girl up on stage- I saw no difference between the tone of a Bon Jovi show and a U2 show except Bon Jovi was better and played longer, though U2 did put on a great show. Don't know about the RHCP but Bruce Springsteen also has always been decent on stage. Rock and roll and anti-social behavior don't have to equate. Personally I think Jon grew up between 1987-1989. Do we really want a 40 year old Jon with a wife and kids (on the cover of People for being a family man no less) swearing on stage like Eminem? The shows are selling out in the States fine and I for one am glad I can take teenagers to the show and we will all have a great time. An occasional curse word or two is fine but in general I like the positive message the band has to convey on stage and in their personal lives.

maybe didn't make my self clear - I do not think the band should behave on stage like GnR did I just think they are too nicey nicey. When belting out Hey God, KTF, Undivided etc which are angry/powerful songs, watching the band smiling at the girls in the front row while putting across a poweful message means peopele don't take them seriously.

Watch U2 sing Sunday Bloody Sunday, one, Bullet the blue sky etc Bono is completely emerged in every word he sings and the audience are in his hands and they almost play to him not the other way round.

Being a big fan of both bands this IMO is why U2 are taken seriously and BJ aren't. Bono's ability at writing better/cryptic lyrics probably helps also because people have to really listen and try and interperet the message being put across where as with BJ the lyrics are plain and simple.

Could be but when I saw the band perform Undivided both live at Times Square and at Shep's Bush on the web Jon's demeanor was appropriate and he sang the song very passionately. It is just that U2 doesn't have as many fun songs though Bono does his share of hamming it up as well. He crowd surfed in Philly and was having a great time. I think Bon Jovi isn't taken seriously because of their history as a pop rock metal band from the 80's whereas U2 was a political band with religious roots. I do agree that it is hard for men to take Jon seriously because he has such an appeal to women but in truth I have seen Bruce Springsteen twice in the last couple months and he smiles and shakes his butt as much or more than Jon during the upbeat numbers. Unfortunately pointy headed elitist music critics are going to hate Bon Jovi no matter what they do.

Reading all your posts makes me realize how lucky I really am. Noone in my life criticizes Bon Jovi (at least not to me) or criticizes me for liking them. I get a few rolling eyes when I tell my friends how many days are left until my concert(79!!!!), but it's all in good fun. We all joke about my "obsession". I've seen a lot of positive press on them lately, even though in MY OPINION, Bounce isn't their best album. A good deal of the American shows are sold out for the tour and those that aren't are quite close to being sold out. That says something. Someone is buying all those tickets.

I agree that most people dislike Bon Jovi image and not their music. I don't remember Jon smiling when he performs Undivided though. Or Keep the Faith. Jon doesn't smile when he performs a lot of songs. He is a versatile performer. One of the best. That's one of the reasons Bon Jovi is still around and such a popular live draw. Despite everything.

U2 are taken the way they are taken because they didn't wear hair and spandex in the 80s. They chose the right image to go alone with their music. Bon Jovi weren't that lucky.

I personally take Bon Jovi seriously. Very seriously. And I know that I am not alone. Among those 100 million people who bought Bon Jovi records 50 million hopefully take Bon Jovi music seriously. Why should I think about people who don't? Majority of those people have not heard Bon Jovi catalogue. Them critisizing Bon Jovi is like me critisizing Dave Matthews Band. I only own Crash which is their most acclaimed record I believe. I don't like it much. I don't like their current singles. Am I going to buy more DMB records? No. Am I going to say DMB sucks? No. I don't know enough about them. With Bon Jovi under the same circumstances most people WILL say that Bon Jovi suck. Because former 80s hair bands are supposed to suck. It's all image.
