I think it's a catch 22 for them. Here in the US no one plays videos anymore so they are pretty useless although it worked pretty well for the online promotion. But overseas they still have alot of video stations and it is a viable marketing tool so they still have to make them.
I like what they are doing with the Who Says video. I've been told it's going to double as a PSA for Habitat for Humanity which at least serves a purpose for making it and must make the band feel like they aren't wasting their time.

There's your answer on a global level for why they still make videos....online promotion, the modern way of video watching. It will only get better as streams improve the quality. I think goes without saying that the time has come to take the power away from MTV, it's not a small population that has scorn for them.

Tell that to Metallica until 1988.

The Hand video is a success here, it's usual to see it in the first place on MTV Brazil top ten.

Aloha !

Is there anyone who actually cares about the videos Bon Jovi made? They're all crap anyway.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Not saying they're artistic masterpieces, but that remark is really naive. If it wasn't for videos like "Bad Name", "Prayer", and "Wanted", MTV wouldn't have had any of the success it had in the late 80's, early 90's, with videos from bands like Warrant, Poison, Firehouse, Europe, Skid Row, etc. Not to mention, those bands would not have had the success they had.

Bon Jovi's videos were no worse than anyone else's (except for the first 2 or 3.) In fact, they did the live stage performance video better than anybody. And obviously, they were doing something right, as their director for many of their videos, Wayne Isham, is still one of the most sought after music video directors today.

I hardly think 1988 can be classified as "these days"

Second, whoever says Springsteen doesn't make videos any more was lying, cos there was one for Devils And Dust

Third, videos are a great promotional tool. I'm about 800 times more likely to find new songs that I like on the music TV channels than I am on the radio...

My point being, in 1988, the same thing was said (even more so.) If you don't make a video, the music won't sell.

Metallica had no problems selling their first 3 albums without music videos. Today, again, in the US anyways, the music video is far less important than it was in 1988.
