The reason for that are the samples that are used for backing vocals. They will only work with a set tempo, which is why Tico plays with a click track. So the tempo is exactly the same every time.

You could have picked a better example surely? And the last clip you posted isn't even Bon Jovi playing, it's another backing band.. different musicians all jam a bit different, and so the singer will have to adjust accordingly.
Totally random and obscure thread in my opinion, with this example in particular. You picked a random, rare cover of a Christmas song? You're a strange chap.

And like Iceman said, they often use click tracks live so the tempo is actually the same. The performances and vocal delivery may suck sometimes these days, but the tempos are usually the same. Thread fail.

Did you read my initial post? I noted that the last example was a different band however i do have an audio with the band around that same time and its no different.

I wanted to use a rockin cover over an original and being that this song is done every year, it was a simple example to select.

Plus i figured this place could use a little Christmas pick me up.

But it's not like a random tempo is picked out of a hat when Jon isn't there. You'd have to think the tempo is worked out long before they start the song.

None of the versions are as good as the one by Lemmy from Motorhead!

Actually, if there's no click-track being used, any song can be a slightly different tempo from show to show. It'll always be a ball-park bpm if the musicians are decent but if whoever plays the first notes comes in too quickly/slowly, the tempo will be off and you pretty much have to stick with it once you're going. It's easier to speed a song up on the fly than it is to rein it in though.

I agree with that but the staggered differences between each Run Run Rudolph had to be planned out ahead of time. You don't just play a song at half the speed by accident.

How do you think they can set the tempo without a click track or a metronome? In a live setting it's the drummer that sets the tempo and depending on him, the tempo can be anything. It's a human thing. Some drummers are better at keeping tempos the same (and this not about time-keeping in a song, but the tempo), some are worse. The singer can say that I like this a little bit faster or that a little slower, but it's still the drummer that starts the song according to his feel at the time. No matter how much you've given it thought beforehand, it's still up to the drummer to get the tempo "right". The rest of the band just has to go with it.
