Yeah, I agree. Jon's overly chorused thin guitar tone live really was a turn off.

Yeah, right. That was the only thing that was wrong with this song live

HAHAHAHA

Fair,. It wasn't the thing but between that and Jon having to go falsetto in the chorus versus the double tracked vocals on the record, just really NOPE'D me out of it. Adore the song otherwise but it lacked the glammy oomph of the studio recording.

I think the falsetto chorus already was the point where the song started to turn the wrong way. In studio and live.
Right from the beginning I couldn't understand what made him do that. In the last chorus (I can't remember if just live or also in the studio version) he stops doing the falsetto thing and in my book that works so much better. But still, to this day this is one of the strangest Bon Jovi songs to me since it just doesn't sound like anything they have done before and after. That doesn't have to be a bad thing at all, but this song just doesn't work me in any form.

That's kind of why I dug it. It had a bit of glam brit-rock swing to it (to me at least) but just loaded with stuff really hard to pull off live. I don't mind the vocals in the studio version, that big breath he has to take to do the "soooooo" live just grates me. Also see: Misunderstood (But that one worked WAY better live)

I like how the discussion moved from JO to SIIS.

JO: I remember at the time of Sex Sells there used to be the song title "Older" circulating as a new song. And I guess there are some early live versions (or was it just the tape from the hearing party?). In any case I think it is a cool song, I believe the recording is ok but could have been even better, maybe the singing is a bit more nasal then I d like, maybe if they had recorded it in 1995 it would have reached top potential.

SIIS: I agree that the falsetto chorus is super strange for BJ, something they only did that one time. But I do like it and I did like it at the time. The verses are more boring and could have been better. Also the keyboard solo is kind of a miss, I mean I like variation and I would actually welcome more keyboard solos from David in the studio recordings, but this one is quite flat, ironically it is like it came from a movie soundtrack (so in that sense fits witht the videoclip but still not interesting). But ok it was cool that they did SIIS overall, it was a new thing at the time and unique for them. I agree that it didnt work live though.

There are JBJ solo tour live versions of "Older", yes.

For the record, I like the song. I am not big on Crush, but that's one I've always enjoyed.

Yeah there have been live performances before, not just the listening party. Even though it's missing Richie's harmonies and playing, Jon's way of attacking the song here is far above the later band live performances. So much attitude and energy. With regards to Jon, by far my favourite one:
