This goes back to my post in another thread about why the CD sales are poor but the gigs sell so well.

It's difficult sometimes to face the fact that the band you follow are no longer culturally relevant but this is the case with Bon Jovi and they care about it a lot more than you think; which is where the problem lies.

I made the point that when they put out BOUNCE they thought it was as much a Bon Jovi record for a new era as KTF. It bombed (inexplicably in my view, I love it) and ever since, they've been flapping about from genre to genre (LH-Country, HAND-McFly!) and they seem so determined to tap into what their audience want, so desperate to create 'the new Bon Jovi sound' that they are unable to sound much like Bon Jovi anymore.

Only America and the critics can save Bon Jovi's new releases now. Both camps LOVE a comeback and use them to herald the return to an era/sound (Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash). If Bon Jovi just f*ckin' relaxed, took their time and crafted an album, they could suddenly find themselves on the T-shirts of the 'next big thing', being heralded as an influence rather than being regarded as the irrelevant poster-children for a long-gone era in rock. If the U.S. took notice, the UK could well follow.

But I doubt this will happen as Jon always tries to 'knock that chip' off his shoulder and prove himself. Stop trying to impress people Jon, you've sold more albums that you ever dreamed of and played more gigs than Jesus ( I think he only did the one, although the water/wine number was apparently a show-stopper).

And for God's sake, let's hear some RIFFS rather than power chords...

Did the Beatles and Stones need PR?
No - they had good records.

times change. Bands no longer have massive hits. There are no anthems anymore. Bands dont sell millions of albums anymore.

I TOTALLY agree with that post except the part saying only america and the critics can save the band .... I think many markets loves come back as long as it is worth it.... yeah in europe we are not much thrilled by the come back of the *new kids on the block* but we had the *take that* come back too and it was as such a success ... everybody loves a *GOOD* come back but for that the band HAS TO LEAVE first ..and frankly I don't think it's going to happen

Also if they(jon) didnt take themselves seriously and wasnt try to please everone they might actually relax and come up with something chartable.

Personally I think if they hadnt put out the Circle and actually did the greatest hits 2 they would have one hell of an album to come out taking half of TheCircle and some new tracks

someone name me the rolling stones, U2s, Guns N Roses, Metallicas, motley Crues and Iron Maidens last MASSIVE hit?

I dont think massive hits exist anymore.
U2 - Vertigo, City Of Blinding Lights - Both very big songs.
Motley Crue - Saints Of Los Angeles... very popular here as well... The single hit number one if im not mistaken.
Guns N Roses havent released a proper album in over 15 years.
Iron Maiden never were a "hits" band, more of a "following" band. Very loyal and strong fan base. The only song of theirs Ive ever heard on the radio is run to the hills.
The Rolling Stones? Well their just the Stones and if there was ever a band that didnt need another hit, its them. They would stay just as popular as they were before.

Great post Beaky, I think The Circle shows that they are still great songwriters but it also shows that they do not take the trouble they once did to add more to each song...

Thing is in the 80s and 90s these guys used to eat, sleep and breathe music... They were totally into it. Now there are family men first and im pretty sure none of them care to lock themselves in the basement and work until every note of music is perfect. No doubt in the 90s the albums were much less rushed and much more worked on.

Also it does bother me a little bit that for Jon to feel inspired to write he needed a recession. Maybe being a bit more open about the kind of songs he is willing to write will help- he seems to put himself in a box. He has openly admitted that he now wants Bon Jovi to be uplifting to the point that he stops himself from writing downer songs, which I think is really a waste as when you are upset you may be able to write great stuff....

the best songs the best poemes are written upon UPSETTING situation ...I think Jon who is the one writting the lyrics has today a problem as he picks the lyrics to fit a market and be seen as an optimistic person

Not so much about Bon Jovi, but more about the industry in general in Amercia, the definition of hit has changed dramatically in the digital age. Anyone know what U2's last Top 10 hit was in the US? It was Discoteque in 1997, yet I assure you Beautiful Day, Elevation, Stuck In A Moment, Vertigo, City of Blinding Lights, and even Get on Your Boots are much more well known.
