Will they ever have another hit? That's a very very good question.
Would I like it? Yes. Do they need it? Not so sure about that. Everything depends how they like to direct their band in the final years ... let's say ... 10 years

Direction another hit?
The only way to have a bit hit is to have a massive airplay on the radio and that's only possible with huge backup of record companies, mtv, and radio stations ...
You don't need a great song to have a hit, you just need to get airplay ... it's a easy as that so what they need to do is find a way to get airplay.

Direction 'no hits but great albums' ...
Stones, Springsteen, AC/DC, ... they don't get played on radio but they continue to make great albums and they continu to fill arena's and stadiums. That's probably a more logical way for Jovi.

The only danger lies in striving for a hit and thus writing hit potential songs that don't get any airplay because we're living in a lady Gaga, Jay Z and all that shit world and so failing in both directions.

If they are going to have a hit i can only think of pulling a trick like :
- Santana - with Smooth (Supernatural)
- Aerosmith - Don't wanna miss a thing

Best chance for them to have a hit is when they manage to write a song that is the theme song of a blockbuster or if they can have a song that is chosen as the themesong for a major event (like Shakira or Nelly Furtado had with the world cup soccer)

To have a hit, you don't really need a quality song. It can only help. What you need is marketing ... now the older the band, the better the 'marketing campain' will have to be.

Very curious what the future will bring...
My opinion is : IF they will have another hit, it will have to be something very 'un-bonjovi-ish'. Why?

Metallica's biggest hit? Nothing else matters
Springsteen: Streets of philadelphia
Oasis: Wonderwall

... all of these songs are totally unrepresentative for their back catalogue but ... they are hits.

Probably, but it's fine with me as long as it's not right before a gig...

What? The question was, "Will they ever have another BIG hit?" Oh, I thought it said "BONG hit!" Never mind...

I agree that they need to do something different to get a hit, mainly write good songs...

You mean that they need to hire an outside hit writer? (Smooth was written by Rob Thomas, I Don't was written by Diane Warren).

None of those was a big hit, they were very modestly succesful, only selling a short while.

I'm pretty sure anything of the Born In The USA album was more succesful than Philadelphia and they're much more representative of Springsteens work.

Co-working with songwriters has been done all the time by Jovi - so no problem there.

About Springsteen: true that anything of Born in the USA was more succesfull, but that album is like jovi's slippery. I was trying to find a song that is NOT representative for an artist, but that does get lots of airplay.

My examples weren't maybe that great, but i just wanted to get my point across ...

Cheers,

I'm not talking about co-writes, both those songs were written entirely by outside writers.

Streets of Philadelphia is a Springsteen song, it's just the production (mainly the drum machine) that makes it sound different.

But what's the point of getting a hit on something you're not going to play? Like Mötley did with If I Die Tomorrow? It was forced on them by the record company, became a hit and they never played it live.

If history is anything to go by, Bon Jovi should make a genuine acoustic love song, like To Be With You by Mr. Big or More Than Words by Extreme. Both band were really hard rocking live, but they had a few acoustic songs. And both got big hits with them.

So like I said earlier, they really need to write a great song. Not something that's covered in over-production to hide the fact that there's very little substance. Make it a plain acoustic song or a song with just the five members. It might not be a Britney Spears -hit, but it would be bigger than anything of the Circle.

Not true, that song was played live in the Carnival of Sins tour. It was awesome, and it's also documented in the live DVD.

From what I've heard that was the only time they played it and that was because the gig was shot on DVD. Not that bug of a fan really, couldn't tell if this is true or not. But it still was a big hit for them and they didn't use it.

No, they played the song in every show in that tour. I caught 2 different shows and the song was featured in both shows (as well as other shows in the tour).

Crue had the best setlist in their career in that tour.

I caught that tour and didn't get it. I got Sick Love Song instead.
Was kinda underwhelmed by the show though

I got both songs in both of the shows I went to. Setlist was excellent, if I have to be real fussy, I'll mention the lack of "Bitter Pill" and any New Tattoo song.

Stageshow was great as well.
