Here's what I've realized about live performances on TV - They all suck. All artists complain about them. We just happen to notice Bon Jovi's more, because we know how it's supposed to sound. With other artists we're not as familiar with, we don't know how bad it sounds because we're not as familiar with their music.

You'll read and hear lots of artisis complaining how they hate to perform on award shows because it's not their sound system, equipment, etc.
I watched and I agree that the sound was crappy. You could only hear Jon's vocals which to me didn't sound bad. But, the guitars and the backing vocals were non existent.

But, all the artists, Alanis, Carlos Santana, those that actually played live and didn't sing to a backing track, the sound was pretty bad.
