Abuse your voice when you are young and you are screwed when you are older. That's just a fact. Smoking while singing is going to cause all sorts of damage, as will tearing his voice up while on steriods during the Slippery tour, as will giving it your all for 3 hours a night in the 90s. Jon was guilty of all of this. It's a no brainer...

Jon was/is actually a very lucky singer.
The way he sang during 80's all the way to early 2000's usually give someone nodules, etc but Jon seemed to not have any of those actual problems (Except 86/87 and Wembley night 3).

Smoking, etc like that wasn't such a smart idea though in terms of not just the voice but other parts of the body.

Forget about the voice for now..

Wembley night 3 sounds quite alright? What kind of voice problem did he have there, did he blow out his voice the night before?

He became hoarse (Sometimes missed notes, etc) during I think the second half of wembley night 3.
Very likely the reason of why they only released 1 hr 30 mins of it.

Listen to Hey God (Beginning of first chorus. Hey god seemed more like vocal cord irritation.)
from that night or These Days from the same night and you probably hear it.

It's kinda weird that somebody who's such a control freak & so heavy on working class ethic would willingly get himself hooked up on stuff that compromises his command of his instrument/craft. It's not like the 90s was this ancient period when it was unknown that smoking hurts your voice and gets you addicted.

He blew his voice out halfway through night 3 at Wembley. Probably also caused by then playing over 150 minutes for three consecutive nights there. If you listen to the original radio broadcast version of Hey God (don't know if it's on Youtube since most of the full versions are compiled there) you can hear that they did quite a lot of overdubs afterwards.
And, as WhamATC pointed out, that's most likely the reason why so litte from the 2nd half of the show was released.

I know! I boggles my mind. JBJ seems like he’s so healthy with the way he’s always been so trim and in shape but then he smokes! Wonder if the smoking was for the appetite suppression. I remember he got really thin and ripped in the 90s when he was doing a little modeling and the movies. Being a singer and smoking is really bad.

He was especially thin in the 80s and 90s. He got ripped in the 90s because he started to appear in movies and he also did that Versace photo-shoot. I'm a straight male but I have to admit Jon was and still is a great looking man for his age.

He seemed to smoke also during the 80's but on and off only sometimes.

I have seen picture of it and the Guadalajara video 1990.

He appears to be smoking in the She Don't Know Me video too.
