imagine WALLS with a IIWYM style production it would be a totally different song,
same goes for WWWU that song deserved a Blood on Blood style production,
both songs could have been really great rock songs but unfortunately destroyed by an awful production

He's not staying popular with the current route either.

On topic: A return to a more BJesque sound would be good yeah, more organic and closer tot he live sound as Rolo pointed out - but IMO they need to work on the lyrics. While there are some gems à la LWTG, All Hail The King or Teardrop, they need to kill the "live my life" thing, along with the yesterday/tomorrow cliché and the "mountains left to climb".

I would also add the fact that JBJ frequently says in interviews that the band were ‘lumped’ in that genre due to the looks and due to who the their manager was at the time.

However, they worked at it and did it well at the time, but I don’t think it ever was Jon’s true calling. When he finally managed the band, he gradually started making changes that fitted more his style.
However, most of the bands fanbase were from the rock genre, and people would be crossover between those that went to see BJ, Def Leppard, GnR, Kiss etc... They have gradually eroded this audience which hasn't been replaced as the new stuff doesn't get any airplay.

It's really frustrating how Jon seems almost ashamed of the "baby pictures", as this is what the vast majority of the crowd want to hear.

If Bon Jovi would have kept releasing rock albums and not following trends the band wouldn't be here today. The fact that they have kept to recreate what was/is current is the reason they survived while pretty much no other bands from that era did.
I'm not saying I wouldn't like a little more punchy and guitar driven tracks but at the same time we can't really argue with the route the band has taken since the early 90s.

I disagree. Most of the bands within the same genre were always going to fall short of Bon Jovi in both album sales and popularity. Similar to the Britpop explosion, lots of bands were contemporaries of Oasis but had no longevity. Oasis never drastically changed their style and had continued success.

KTF & TD bucked the trends of the day and were successful due to quality songs.

It’s My Life most certainly opened the door to new fans, but did that number supersede the numbers they were losing?

I don’t think a continuation of writing catchy, quality pop/rock would have seen the demise of the band at all. I personally think they would have been MORE successful during the post 2000 era.

People really shouldn’t underestimate how big the hard rock fan base is.

Metallica dwarf Bon Jovi these days and have retained their core audience. Bon Jovi lost a lot of theirs chasing trends.

They have had longevity due to hard core fans and a relentless touring schedule. It’s nothing to do with trying to chase what’s popular.

Sure, you see a lot of young faces at gigs but are the majority there because of post 2000 songs or because of the back catalogue and the fact their Brother/Sister/Mum/Dad etc are fans?

I’m positive there ARE fans out there and on this board who were introduced because of “newer” songs. But I’d wager the reason they became fans who attended gigs and got hooked on this band is because of the back catalogue of work.

hoaxes, Jon always used his image taking advantage of the moment until the present, the eighties was a fad, and in the nineties when he cut his hair and changed his look, Jon was just imitating the transformation of Bono with Acthung Baby, but Jon did it American style, at that time people dressed and combed differently. The same happened with These Days, Jon seemed Kurt Cobain, had the image of a Grunge singer. And so it has always been until our days. Now, many stars showing their gray hair.

About rock and sound, he does not have to write a song like Bad Medicine to make a rock song, he just has to add elements of guitars and something more of attitude to his new compositions, A Teardrop, WDR, WWYDF, Devils , Last Man Standing, Thorn In My Side ......

There are no excuses for a rock song not to sound with guitars and rocked.

I disagree about Jon imitates someone else hair style,it is apsurd to say that, even to do transformation because someone else is doing,he always had cool hair style and no one looks that way at the same time, specially hair from TD era is his best looking and grunge singers look like they just get up from the bed,Bono cuts his hair before Achtung baby.
For me rock music is rock music no matter what song is about,it is core of drums, bass and guitar, those three create sound-musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass and drums and one or more singers, but the genre has become extremely diverse.
Rock today is not like rock in 1970 or 1980. Most of rock bands from those years recycle themselves-BJ,Metallica,Iron Maiden,U2,Aerosmith,Europe,Whitesnake and others, but you have bands that pretty much have same sound from the beginning but they play small arenas or festival at best.
For me Metallica stopped with Load and Reaload, everything after that is bad recycling,Iron Maiden stopped with Fear of the dark,BJ stopped with These days with some sparks with Crush and Bounce,Whitesnake stopped with Slip of the tongue,U2 stopped with Pop and so on...

Jon walked into a photo shoot in 1993/94 with a flanel shirt, telling the photographer "I want to look like Nirvana".

Prostitute is an attempt at a grunge song. Hey God is in that environment, although he rocks like Neill Young and makes her more attractive, great rock song, by the way...
