The way the 2020 tour was, Jon CAN'T SING. Which part of that is hard for people to accept?
And honestly, I don't think it's just vocal chords. For whatever reason, whatever happened to him, it's the same thing from 2001, he's having a hard time with the air flow that lacks pressure. If it was just the vocal chords you could detect when he was struggling with the tuning, or sounding out of key. In his case, every time he screams you can see how difficult for him is to output that air pressure. And the consequence is a out of breath Jon (he could manage this situation before) but ended up static on the stage.
And, it's not covid. In 2019 he was already struggling really hard.

Jons problem was vocal chord closure. He lost his mixed voice, so his forced to sing in a very airy chest voice, yelling at times. His chords were not closing together correctly for him to build up the compression and back pressure needed to mix in the Pharyngeal sound he uses. When you loose the ability to do this, man it throws everything out. Your about to start singing and your instrument doesn't quite work, you come in late, you go out of beat, its all the signs of someone struggling with chord closure. I've over sung and been there. The difference is, I rested and got myself back into shape in a couple of days, I feel Jons issue is more longer term with stiffened Vocal chords which comes to some with age. He maybe able to pull it together for 3 or 4 songs, in the odd show, but a tour, I think you will see more of what we got on the last tour after a couple of nights.
