1. OK, it is not just the matter of being able to hit the high notes. It is the matter of just singing better. You breath better and sing better if you do not run much. You can make an experiment - run up staircase and try to sing whatever you wish. Believe me, it would be harder and the performance would be worse while running and jumping! I tried it myself!
2. When you have had a torn cartilege and needed a number of surgeries for it it is not a good idea to jump like crazy on a hard surface (like that one on stage). It means asking for trouble. I am not an expert but I am active jogger and swimmer. I am therefore roughly familiar with basic sports injuries, dangers and precautions. Jon must keep his knees healthy for the next 2 years of touring so that not to cancel shows. It therefore seems quite reasonable to avoid the most dangerous stress factors and give up all that jumping on hard floor.
I am really fine with it when he keeps fit through his training in the gym and translates that fitness into nice harmonious and toned movements during the show. I do not need him bouncing and jumping and leaping and making somersaults
