Yes, Southern dates tend to be bland no matter what; however, I think that if Richie was at the last 13 shows, Always and certainly Dry County would have gotten a few/(more) airings. You have to consider the fact that 2/12 shows without Richie, Dry County was still played (not counting Jazz Fest where DC wouldn't have been played no matter what).

Still doesn't matter. One of those shows was Montreal, which A) Isn't Southern America, but is in Canada (Which by rule of thumb, Canadian and New York/Jersey shows tend to get the best North American setlists) . and B) Montreal usually always gets good setlists. The second time it got played was the last show of the leg, which again is usually an out-of-the-ordinary setlist. I still don't see the setlists being much more varied as they were for this leg even if Richie was there.

1. Well, if we want to get technical, 2/12 dates were in Canada
2. I'd say the last few New York/New Jersey dates have been rather bland with the exception of MSG 2 setlist wise. I don't include MSG 3 from the last leg as special because Always and DC were semi-regulars on that leg. There were very few rarities/fan favorites played at All 4 NMS shows and even dating back to the LH tour stops at MSG and the dreadful Prudential run.

I agree, Montreal has gotten some great sets. I mean the band only played there 5 times over the last year or so...

The sets aren't special on the last date of a leg just because Jon it's the last date, they're usually special because they end in a city the band likes and they want to put the extra effort in to play some rarer songs.

If you look at the past few legs, it's pretty obvious:
- Chicago
- Rio de Janeiro (although most LA dates got good sets)
- Sydney
- Vancouver

I'm not saying that Always would have been played every night but I do think it might have been once or twice based on the previous North American leg. Why? F*ck if Boston, a city that typically gets extremely bland sets can get DC, it seems likely Always might have popped up at one of the 12 shows.

It's also has nothing to do with Richie as to why Always wasn't played. I said it earlier, Phil can play the song, everyone here knows that. It's Jon laziness and the fact that he knew he didn't have to put in the effort to appease most of the crowd.

I have to agree. Like I said in another post, if Jon wanted to, he could have said look over "This Ain't A Love Song" for tomorrow night. That is all he would have had to do. They are all professionals... especially Phil. It would not have been perfect but it would have been interesting (and exciting). Musically, it is a little more complicated than End of the World As We Know It, but again, they are in a band... it is their day job.

Erick I disagree with your view of the outro to Always from MSG. I've heard Always twice in 2008 and at least six on the American legs. To me that MSG show was the best I've heard Richie do the outro since 1995. I can't make a judgment from other boots or YT videos. At the third Garden show Always and DC was done in the same show. How many times has that happened this tour?

I think laziness on Jon's part plays a role but there are other factors as well. Remember just another opinion thrown into the conversation.

I think Randers 2008 was one of the best vocals since they started playing it again. That part at 4:50, he rarely goes for that anymore.

I was arguing that it didn't have anything to do with Richie being there or not. Whether Richie was there or wasn't, this was going to be a very bland leg of the tour. I knew that before Richie cancelled.

As for everything else, I agree. The four cities you listed are huge, very popular cities though. Jon knows plenty of people are flying in to see the end of a leg of the tour and will usually add something to make it special for them. Look at the end of every leg. There is never a bland run-of-the-mill setlist. There is always something added. Whether the band liked St.Louis or not, they were going to play something special.... and they played the most special thing they could out of the 30 odd songs they could play as a band.

Eh, maybe. But I certainly wouldn't claim that about any other song I've seen.

He's flat all the time. He doesn't hit half the notes he's trying for there.
