Milton keynes has a capacity of 65,000. but the Bon Jovi gigs were licensed to 60,000

also i dont think the croke park figure is right check the photo in the center of the dublin page http://bonjovi.aeglive.com/photos.html and look at all the empty seats
just because the seats weren't full doesn't mean the tickets weren't sold. the amount of seats taken out at the back were relatively few compared to most of the other concerts and when i came back from the toilets after the nickelback, the pitch was absolutely rammed.

the city of mancheter stadium holds up to 65,000 for concerts i read it on ther site

also al the tickets wer sold from the venue making it sold out , but dont forget that the people like ticket master might not have been sold out but they still had to buy the tickets from the venue , then you have scalpers aswell

My own impression of Croke Park was that it was eventually near enough full - my very conservative estimate of the crowd size would be around 75,000 at least. It was a bit alarming initially though, when the band took to the stage (on time, unusually!) of what appeared to be a half-empty stadium. From my perspective, it took the stragglers about an hour or so to filter in (as a sidenote, why do people spend so much time and money getting tickets, and then not bother to give the show their full attention? There were two men beside my wife and I who spent literally half of the show away from their seats; judging by the smell of them, they were drinking instead.) Another point about Croke Park - many of the crowd photos were taken early in the show, when the stands were still filling up, when there were visible gaps, and when it was still daylight. As it got darker, the atmosphere increased dramatically and the crowd was both vast and vocal - Livin' On A Prayer is the best example of audience participation I've heard at any concert I've personally been to.

I've been to three concerts at Croke Park, and have noticed that there are certain seating blocks that aren't used, maybe because of restricted views etc. Also, as a general note, I don't think that any show is ever really 'Sold Out'. Was Bon Jovi at Croke Park ever described as such? I didn't hear anything to that effect. But the other shows I've been to there were described in those terms - yet there were gaps in the seating. U2 (June 2005) was one of two shows that sold out in less than one hour, and Robbie Williams (June 2006) sold out Croke Park in 20mins - yet for the Robbie concert, some scattered seats were available the day before the concert (from TM, not scalpers). Just out of interest, Robbie's own website lists 78,905 as the crowd size, although I don't know how they arrived at this figure. I noted that the barcodes on tickets were scanned at this show - the first time this has been done in my experience, and maybe this data could be used to create the number.

If a ticket is sold but the stub isn't collected at the gate the band don't get money from it. The only way to reliably know exactly how many people attended which show is for the promoters to publish the amount of stubs that were gathered during the entrance. However, the promoters never give out the full number of people, because of the aforementioned reason that they have to pay royalties to the band. I'm sure the stubs are still collected and counted.

For determining how many people attended a non-seating concert (such as Hyde Park, and I would imagine the pitch as well for stadiums) "they" use a formula whereby they take a picture from the helicopter. They know the size of the area, and they have sophisticated methods of counting how many people per square meter. They take into account the fact that people are more packed in the front. Applying this formula they get an estimate which is accurate up to 10%.

For example the promoters' figures for Hyde Park was 92,000, where in fact there were closer to 120,000 people there.

There's no way there was over 80,000 people in MK, 58,000 sounds about right. I think the biggest one was Croke Park with ~82,000 (not sure about Munich though).

I think those empty seats we see are the people who ran to the retaining wall to get closer to Jon. Nobody stays put if you can get that close. Show looks sold out to me.

Croke Park capacity when used in its' normal use is 82 500. In sold out concert the capacity is near 90 000.

City of Manchester Stadium capacity when playing football is 42 000. In sold out concert the capacity is about 50 000.

Hampden Park capacity when playing football is 50 670. In sold out concert the capacity is almost 60 000.

Olympiastadion capacity when playing football is 69 060. In sold out concert the capacity is about 80 000 but not bigger 'cause of the race track... Authorities demands it's to be clear from the crowd.
