I have talked to a lot of people from this board who have visited New York (and my house). Some of them have never been on public transportation - ever - and don't feel comfortable using it. We're not talking airplanes here but local buses and subways. So I try to make it clear that sometimes it is an option that can make things cheaper.

I am so used to it being from here that I don't even think about it - but others do.

I don't care if I'm a few stops away from downtown since it's so easy to get around. I'm quite familiar with the city since we go there relatively frequently.

If you're not freaked out by public transportation look away from downtown a bit and the rates will be much better.
I'm definitely okay with public transportation and was actually counting on it in Boston. I definitely do NOT want to drive there! LOL I drive in Atlanta rush hour traffic everyday, and I'm fine in places like Chicago and DC, but I draw the line at Manhattan and Boston. The problem is I've never been to Boston, so I don't know which hotels are truly right by T stations. (I'd rather not mess with buses, too.) Also, I can't take advantage of Hotwire since you don't know which hotel you're locking in and can't check to see if it is close to a T station. <sigh> I've found a Doubletree which is supposed to be right across the street from a red line station (JFK/UMass), and the rate isn't too bad if I take the super saver deal and pay when I make the reservation. That's why I'm waiting to lock anything in until I get tickets. If anyone has any other T-convenient hotel suggestions (either in town or farther out), feel free to send them my way!

Here's a map of the T:

Red Line:
Take the Red Line to the Park Street stop and switch to Green Line Eastbound (3 stops) to the North Station stop. Enter the TD Banknorth Garden at either the East or West entrance.

There is an error on Bon Jovi's website, they have the Boston dates down as the 11th and 12th under tour dates, but they announced the shows for 9th and 10th. Just in case anybody else was wondering....

Those were my calculations, too! And it looks like I can take the T from the airport to the hotel, too. So, unless something more promising (aka less expensive) reveals itself to me, I'll probably be at the Doubletree.

Terri, did you try the Bullfinch hotel. It's in walking distance of the arena. There is that one and The Onyx (more expensive but even closer to the arena).

Thanks for the suggestions, Deb. I did check both of those. When we originally heard there was going to be a Friday show, I thought I'd fly in that day and just spend one night in Boston. I thought I might splurge on the Onyx then. When they switched nights, and I decided to go for both shows (meaning 2 nights in Boston), I decided I'd rather stay farther away and save some $$. Once I get my tickets, I'll book my frequent flyer ticket and lock in that Doubletree rate. I think my magical mystery tour is almost set! Now if we just hear something about Central Park. Although, if that falls through, I'll have a whole weekend in NYC for exploring -- can't go wrong either way.

Thanks again!
