Bob Dylan has announced that he will be trying out an anti-ticket tout model for one of his upcoming shows.

The legendary singer-songwriter, who is currently on a tour of the US, has scrapped the option for fans to buy advanced tickets for his show at The Warfield in San Francisco on Wednesday (August 25) night.

Instead the only way people can see the gig is by purchasing a $60 (£39) general admission ticket on the door and the only way they can pay for it is in cash.

In a move that will eliminate excessive ticket handling and processing fees, plus reduce ticket scalping, those attending the show will also only be able to buy one ticket each.

Fans who want a ticket are being allowed to queue up outside the venue from 12pm (PDT), with doors opening at 5.30pm (PDT) and the show beginning at 8pm (PDT).

"Given the state of touring and how fees have escalated, it was a real breath of fresh air to do something very consumer oriented by eliminating all ticketing charges," David Lefkowitz, a representative for promotion company Goldenvoice said in a statement. "It's almost a throwback to another time."

While there are huge security implications for the 2,250 capacity theatre taking $135,000 (£88,000) in cash, this old fashioned way of doing things was the brainchild of "Bob's people", reports Pollstar.com.

It's a nice idea but wouldn't work on the scale of venues which Bon Jovi (and most big bands) play. I'd say it's even risky for that venue but it's definitely not feasible for a 20,000 capacity arena or a 60,000 capacity stadium.

Nice idea but just can't really work for stadiums and such. And no, I can't see many bands/artists doing the same at all.

I sure wouldn't buy plane tickets (or drive hundreds of miles) and pay for hotel stays to go to shows without knowing that I was going to get in to see the show! Sorry, that's not a very "fan-friendly" system, as far as I'm concerned. The paperless ticketing system that Bruce used for some shows on the last tour certainly seemed to give scalpers difficulty. Of course, it also made it just as difficult for fans to sell extra tickets. Be careful what you wish for . . .

it's not applicable for huge venues
it's IMPOSSIBLE for people who TOUR and do many shows it's possible even for jovi JUST for one off show maybe but as a regular system it is not possibly applicable for bon jovi ...

It would remove a lot of fans who do the shows to show off though then that would make it a refreshing audience

Back in the day it wasn't uncommon to have football matches with 50-120k people going along and paying at the gate so it's definitely a feasible method for selling tickets on a large scale.

In fact iI'd be much easier to do it in a stadium or open air arena with dozens of turnstiles / ticket booth than in an auditorium for a few thousand people with 1 box office.

Does this mean that ALL the seats would be general admission, first come first serve? Would the seats be pre-assigned? And what with the fans queuing up long before the ticket office opened, I fear fights breaking out.

Bon Jovi is just too plain popular to try that--just as The Who were in 1979.

This is a way to make sure that only fans buy tickets, though. For example, there are people in Japan buying tickets to a Bon Jovi concert in Boston, who wouldn't ever even think about going (and might not even be fans, for that matter). They just buy tickets online, and then when the concert is sold out, and people are desperate to buy tickets, the people can put these tickets up on eBay at ridiculous prices.

Bon Jovi might not be a good example because their prices are ridiculous anyway.
But this still happens for most any concert or major sporting event these days.

Paperless ticketing can do the same thing, yet still assure the fan who has to travel to get to the show that he/she will be able to get in and see the show! And what about the weather? I went to Chicago for 2 shows on the Lost Highway tour. The shows were at the United Center in February. That's not the best part of Chicago, and even though they'd had a bit of a warm front to come through, it was still pretty damn cold - cold enough that they opened the doors one of the nights to let us wait on the concourses rather than outside while the band finished soundcheck. I wouldn't have cared to wait in a line all day in that cold in that neighborhood with a wad of cash in my pocket. Sure, chances are we wouldn't have been robbed because of the number of people, but does any band really want to set their fans up for that possibility? As I understand it, many of the venues no longer wanted the fan club camp-outs for tickets -- this would be so much worse because it would be so many more people! And yes, I realize that you queue in Europe and that the weather isn't always ideal. Nonetheless, the band generally tours your stadiums in the spring and summer. Our arena tours are often in the winter and early spring. I sure wouldn't have gone to Montreal this year if I hadn't had tickets in hand. The weather turned out to be fine on the 2 show days . . . but a day later they had to de-ice the plane before we could leave.

Yeah, right, because Dylan isn't the single most important songwriter in popular music history?

Just with him taking this approach shows he's the ****ing man.
