They've never been U2, but I always considered 2010-2013 to be a good time for the band in terms of production.
I remember my dad (who went with me to one of the London O2 shows in 2010) was really impressed with arena stage setup and moving screens. I was too!
If anything they should go even more overboard with this, as to compensate for poor performance. But I guess this has to do with return on investment on a such small no. of dates (compared to much longer tours in the past).

Sorry, just read this now. There has been dozens of people complaining during the most recent tours. The argument was being made that they couldn't deviate from the setlist because of the production, the video cues and lights were tied to songs and people would make the argument that they would a bare bones stage if it meant a more varied setlist.
I never bought the correlation between the two, the production and the setlist. If they feel like playing a song the can just play it without the big cues I felt.
