Default Denver show on 04/03/03 was just plain....

......AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

First, I met Jon on 04/01/03 while he was arriving to Denver to give an interview to the local radio station, MIX 100.3. It just happens that the station is in the same building where I work and it was very convinient and easy for me to meet him.... )

Just some quick notes and comparisons to the previous Denver show on 04/30/2001:

- They sounded better, the sound was very full and bass-y

- Jon's voice seems to have gotten better since OWN tour. He hit all the high notes as if this was 1986 again....

- The stage setup is by far the best ever for Bon Jovi. The laser show and the satelites were just awesome. They even filmed special footage to play in the background (Satelite surface) while playing Undivided, Bounce and Everyday. Themes for Bounce and Undivided were 9/11 related while during Runaway (YES, they did play that) they showed video footage of NYC at night.

- Better set list, no "I'll sleep when I'm Dead / Pappa was a Rolling Stone" Medley at all, which I think was a good thing, that was overdue to retire. They played older songs that I didn't expect to hear live along with 6 tracks from Bounce. Nothing off 7800 Fahrenheit or These Days though.

- 22,000 +++ fans can't be wrong

- Everyone at my work was admiring my BOUNCE TOUR 2003 T-shirt and saying "I wish I went, my friends are calling and rubbing it in, they had a great time"

- I took a friend with me and this was to be his first Jovi experience and he was BLOWN away.

- Richie can sing very good and anyone who says otherwise shall die...

- How about this: There was a Piano, Bass, Drum and Guitar solo, all over 2 minutes long. Dave Bryan sure knows his stuff

- At the Encore, Jon was wearing a Denver Broncos jersey sporting the name of our new quarterback Jake Plummer, who was signed to Denver only about 3 weeks ago. Jon pointed at his name on the back of the shirt and said "Now we're gonna roll" meaning that Broncos will be doing good next season...

- Jon said F U to Pearl Jam (who demolished a doll with a mask of President Bush on it right on the same stage only two nighs before the Jovi show) and an F U to Justin Timberlake.

- Set list in no order:
Runaway, Living on a prayer, Bad Name, Wanted, Raise your Hands, Wild In the streets, Born to be my baby, I'll be There for you (Richie on vocals, Jon backstage), Blaze of glory, Saturday Night, It's My Life, Just Older, Bounce, Everyday, Undivided, Right Side of Wrong (great live but I still don't like the album version), The Distance, Misunderstood, ENCORE Keep the Faith, Bad Medicine and Shout..

- I got my money's worth. Their shows just keep getting better.

- Many hot girls at the show

- No sad faces after the show, everyone was still singing even if the show ended and the band left the stage.

- 3 and a half hours of Rock n Roll

No Sleep When I'm Dead that's totally cool, but which older songs that you didn't expect to hear? I didn't see any rarity in the setlist.

3.5 hours that includes GGD's set right?

The meeting was cool. I was getting off work at 3 PM and Jon was supposed to be at the studio at 3:30. I waited downstairs along with 7 other people while listening to the radio for updates. There were some idiots around who were hopping onto the elevators trying to get into the studio and wait for Jon there. Mix 100.3 Radio show host - GIF - the most arrogant asshole in Denver - came downstairs to smoke and he was asking us questions. I told him I moved here from Europe 5 years ago and that it was my only wish to meet Jon. He didn't believe me but he did later notice the slight accent I have. It is usually unnoticable but I just got off a 9 hour work day and all I wanted to do was to hit my bed face first. We asked him if there were still people upstairs in the studio or did everyone get kicked out to which he replied saying that there were some people hiding in the bathroom stalls. He went back up and got onto his mic and told the listeners that they just got a call from Jon and he wasn't gonna make it on time because there was a delay at the airport in Cleveland and they were still flying in, flying over Nebraska at the time off the call. Apparently Jon said he'd be there at 5 PM. Well, time was passing and a few of us were still waiting. Suspicion raised that his could easily be an April Fools day joke. GIF announced on the radio that there were people waiting downstairs and that some guy "flew in from Europe" just to meet Jon and see the show. SPEAKING OF ME.......

Jon finally arrived at around 5 PM in a Dodge Van with only one bodyguard. We couldn't see him because the windows were tinted dark but we knew it was him because you could see a shilouette of hair in the second row of seats. The van entered the building through the ENTRANCE ONLY gate into Denver Downtowns's largest bus station - The Civic Center. The took the freight elevator upstairs so none of us caught him. Jon was interviewed by GIF, talking mostly about his family, his Dodge Viper, his youngest kid and about the secret to staying good looking which was alcohol and smoking according to him...

Meantime, I was calling the station from my cell phone and I got through and they said they would put me on the air to ask questions and that I was the first call on the line. I was holding and holding and finally the guy told Jon that the security around the building as very tight but there was only a handfull of us downstairs. Then he told Jon the following:

- "Do you realise there is a guy downstairs who came from Europe to see you? But don't worry, he is NOT French."

Jon just replied with a chuckle and said that was cool and he appreciates that kind of support...

Finally he said they would take some calls, AFTER they play "It's my Life"... The song ended and then the unthinkable... BYE Jon it was great to have you here. THEY ENDED IT EARLY AND TOOK NO CALLS.

I understood though because Jon was probably very tired and anted to get rest from that flight. I hugn up the phone and left the lobby of the building to go catch him downstairs. The people that were with me didn't wanna follow me to the loading dock where Jon apparently went in, they thought he would come out through the front door of the building. I was the only one that went towards the loading dock and sure enough, his van was still there. I went there, waited five minutes and then he showed up. He had about six bodyguards this time and the arrogant DJ was with him. I said "JON!!!" and he flashed a peace sign at me. I told him I loved the new record and to keep going strong. I also thanked him for the 20 years of great music.

I didn't want an autograph because I thought it would be a bad idea to ask for one, he looked very tired and I didn't wanna hold him up for one second. It was enough for me to meet him and I am sure I will meet him at the grammys in a few years as it is. My band got an offer from Universal...

The reason I thought the DJ was arrogant is because we told him to hook us up and get us to meet Jon. There were only seven people there at the time of Jon's arrival. We are mature and understanding and all we wanted was a handshake, pictures and an autograph. We grew up with Bon Jovi carved in as idols in our brain and we don't know any other way. We sure do appreciate him and his music more than the DJ does. We wuldn't try and hurt or crush Jon, we would be calm because that is how mature people are. I was the youngest one out of seven at 22. Besides, Jon had all these bodyguards that were 6 foot 19 or something and they were so big it made you think that their names were same as of some big cities.

It was cool but I feel bad that not all of us met him. I was the only one waiting by the van whil the others thought that Jon would come out through the same gate he came in through. But, as I said earlier, it was ENTRANCE ONLY. I have been orking in that tower for two years so I knew my way around...

One more thing - I made a mistake in my setlist. They DID play "I'll sleep when I'm dead" but without any medley like "Sympathy for the Devil" or "Pappa was a rolling stone". My friend reminded me that they played it and it is also listed in David Bryan's tour diary...
